Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve taken a look at the characters from each of the game companies in this title, and we’ll conclude this blog series by going over the characters on the Capcom side!

Captain Commando

I think he’s been in all the Namco X Capcom games. He was originally just a spokesperson who thanked you for buying Capcom’s games on the first page of the instruction booklets on the NES, and he looked more like Captain Harlock. But several years later, he got a redesign and a crazy weird arcade beat ‘em up featuring him and a team of wacky characters like a baby who drives a mech. Needless to say, it was an awesome game. In the other Project X-Zone games, his teammates would help him attack. But in Project X-Zone 2, other classic Capcom characters help out, like the characters from Legendary Wings for instance. Speaking of classic Capcom characters, one of the shopkeepers you can buy items from between stages is Sylphie from Forgotten Worlds. She also sells you cards in SNK vs. Capcom: Card Fighters Clash.

June (Star Gladiator)

I don’t really know much about Star Gladiator. I think it’s a 3-D fighter, but that’s about all I can tell you. June is a girl in the game who wears lots of pink and fights with large gold hoop rings. And that’s all I know!

Dante and Vergil (Devil May Cry)

I never got into the Devil May Cry games either. Not silly enough for me I guess. I know who the characters are and what they look like as they’ve been cameos in other Capcom games, but that’s all I know about them.

Strider

He’s been in all the Namco X Capcom games, too, I believe. I’ve played a few Strider games, but I’m not very good at them. On the PSOne, they released Strider 2, which I have. It was a 3-D update to the original game, and it also came with a separate disc with the original arcade game on it. There was recently another Strider update game that you could download on consoles, but I haven’t played it yet. Some Strider villains show up in Project X-Zone 2 as well, like some robots and Tong Pooh.

Chris Redfield, Jill Valentine, Leon Kennedy (Resident Evil)

Another Capcom series I’ve never gotten into, but Jill Valentine is a cool character. I usually call her Jill Sandwich, though. Other characters and settings from the RE games show up in Project X-Zone 2, like Ada Wong and you fight lots of zombies as enemies. I wish that Frank West from Dead Rising would’ve returned to this game as well, as he was in the first Project X-Zone. Even though I don’t play the Dead Rising games, I had fun watching my brother Jeff play them, as they are pretty silly games if you think about it.

Ryu, Ken, Ingrid, Chun-Li (Street Fighter)

Street Fighter characters have always been well represented in the Namco X Capcom/Project X-Zone series, and here is no exception. Although for the life of me, I don’t know why they decided to have Ingrid be in this game of all people. I’d rather they put Cammy in there. SF baddies M. Bison and Juri show up as bosses for you to fight in Project X-Zone 2 as well.

Demitri, Morrigan, Felicia (DarkStalkers)

Another Capcom game series that has been well represented in all three Namco X Capcom games, but I’ve never really gotten into the DarkStalkers series much, for some reason. Demitri is just your regular vampire character, and aside from her green hair, I’ve never liked Morrigan much. She’s just too creepy. Lots of other DarkStalkers characters show up as baddies for you to fight in Project X-Zone 2, including Q-Bee, Pyron, and that rock ‘n roll zombie guy that I can’t remember the name of. I don’t really have a favorite DarkStalkers character, but if I had to pick one, I’d say it was Hsien-Ko. And I’m disappointed she’s not in this game as she was in the past two Project X-Zone titles.

Mega Man X and Zero

All right! Now we’re to the characters I know a lot about. While I prefer the original Mega Man, I guess they tried to go with more ‘serious’ characters for this game. Mega Man X and Zero were also in Project X-Zone. They have a lot of attacks from their games. X uses his charged buster shots and Zero uses his sword, of course. But X also uses weapons he could acquire from bosses in his games, like Volt Catfish’s Triad Thunder and Frost Walrus’ Frost Wall. Mega Man enemies show up, too, like those hard hat guys and the robots piloting mechs from the X series. Bosses include Vile and Sigma. There is even a Mega Man X themed battle stage that is really cool, and it’s based on one of my favorite areas from Mega Man X4: Cyber Peacock’s stage. They even implement some of the same obstacles and it’s pretty clever. I only wish that Tron Bonne and the Servebots from Mega Man Legends were in this game. They were in the previous two titles in the series and they’re some of my favorite Capcom characters. I think Tron and the Servebots are some of the best characters Capcom has created.

Phoenix Wright & Maya Fey (Ace Attorney series)

And now we get to the main reason why I got Project X-Zone 2. I’m a huge fan of the Phoenix Wright games and they’re my favorite series on the DS. So I had to see what they would be up to in this game! I don’t think the creator of Phoenix Wright really wanted them to be in games like this or in fighting games, as he has said Phoenix isn’t a fighter. I guess that’s why his moves were so hard to pull off in Marvel vs. Capcom 3. It’s funny how Phoenix and Maya get involved in Project X-Zone 2. You see, Heiachi from Tekken is being framed by Shadaloo for criminal activity, and so he hires Phoenix Wright to be his lawyer! I would love for that to be a case to solve in the main Phoenix Wright games! They clearly state that Phoenix and Maya aren’t fighters in the game, so Morrigan charges Maya’s spirit necklace with energy so they can fight. They have pretty silly attacks, though. Phoenix yells out “Objection!” although they didn’t bother to translate any of it. He also uses Psy-Locks on enemies and breaks them. Maya summons the Steel Samurai to fight. Those past couple of sentences probably don’t make any sense if you’ve never played the Phoenix Wright games. I haven’t come across any other Ace Attorney references in Project X-Zone 2. I wish Capcom would release more of the main games in the series here in the US!

And that’s all for now! I hope you enjoyed this blog series about the characters in Project X-Zone 2. If you have any questions or comments about anything in the game, please let me know in the comments section! Later! –Cary

Project X-Zone 2 is a strategy RPG on the 3DS that stars popular video game characters from companies like SEGA, Bandai Namco, Capcom, and even Nintendo!
