\"\"<\/a>You are a boy who has been shipwrecked on an island filled with mystical ruins.\u00a0 It\u2019s your job to solve the puzzles in these ruins to discover their secrets.\u00a0 Why?\u00a0 Well, you\u2019ve got nothing else better to do, I guess.\u00a0 RIME is a 3-D action adventure puzzle game available for PS4, Xbox One, Switch, and PC, but reviewed on PS4 here.<\/p>\n

For such a scrawny little boy, your main character here is certainly athletic.\u00a0 He can run, jump, roll, climb up certain ledges, and pick up and move some objects.\u00a0 The only other thing he can do in the game is yell.\u00a0 Some of the puzzles are sound activated so you\u2019ll have to shout to solve them.\u00a0 Other puzzles involve you tinkering with switches, light and shadow, day and night, and even perspective.<\/p>\n

The game reminds me a lot of titles like ICO, Shadow of the Colossus, and The Last Guardian.\u00a0 Many of the puzzles are like something you\u2019d see in a Zelda game, too.\u00a0 So if you wished for more of those intricate dungeons missing from Breath of the Wild, then RIME may fill that void.\u00a0 And some of the isolated island areas make me think of Myst, too.\u00a0 Graphics are crisp and clear, and even remind me of Wind Waker in a few spots.<\/p>\n

RIME does have a few problems here and there.\u00a0 Goals and objectives are oftentimes unclear.\u00a0 You do have a little fox companion to guide you, but he\u2019s not always helpful.\u00a0 I think the only reason why I was able to figure out the game so quickly is that I had a fantastic demo session of the game at PAX South this past year to help get me started.\u00a0 The game is also a tad short, with only four main big areas. But there are plenty of secrets and goodies to find in each area, so replay value is high. And it\u2019s a bit buggy, too.\u00a0 There were a couple of times I would respawn in weird places, and once I even had to restart at the last checkpoint.<\/p>\n

But other than that, this is a fantastic game and it held my interest all the way through. \u00a0The environments are beautiful, the puzzles are clever, and the ending is one of the most emotional ones I\u2019ve ever seen in a video game.\u00a0 Definitely a gem you won\u2019t want to pass up.<\/p>\n

Kid Factor:<\/strong><\/p>\n

RIME is rated E-10 with an ESRB descriptor of Fantasy Violence.\u00a0 You don\u2019t really fight anything, but there are a couple of monsters who can impede your progress.\u00a0 But the game will fade out before seeing your character get hurt, and then you just start close to where you were before.\u00a0 Even though the game isn\u2019t that violent, there are some characters that may frighten young children.\u00a0 Reading skill is helpful for some of the menu text, but not necessary just to play as the game has no words in it.\u00a0 Younger gamers may need help with the puzzles and tougher jumps, though.\u00a0 And the ending is SUPER SAD, so if you beat this game in front of your kids, be prepared for a long discussion about death and moving on.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
