{"id":16672,"date":"2017-07-21T00:01:57","date_gmt":"2017-07-21T00:01:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.gamerdad.com\/blog\/?p=16672"},"modified":"2017-07-08T17:49:52","modified_gmt":"2017-07-08T17:49:52","slug":"retro-bit-generations-part-5","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.gamerdad.com\/blog\/2017\/07\/21\/retro-bit-generations-part-5\/","title":{"rendered":"Retro-Bit Generations: Part 5"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gamerdad.com\/blog\/rodland\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-16671\" src=\"http:\/\/www.gamerdad.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/RODLAND-140x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"140\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.gamerdad.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/RODLAND-140x150.jpg 140w, http:\/\/www.gamerdad.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/RODLAND-279x300.jpg 279w, http:\/\/www.gamerdad.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/RODLAND.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 140px) 100vw, 140px\" \/><\/a>OK so we\u2019re finally at the last part of my look at the games on the Retro-Bit Generations console.\u00a0 Here you can expect to see everything from Rod Land to Zooming\u2026Secretaries?!?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rod Land NES &amp; GB<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I love this game!\u00a0 I hear it\u2019s a really rare NES game and didn\u2019t even come to the US at all.\u00a0 It\u2019s also an arcade game, shame that version isn\u2019t on here.\u00a0 Anyway, it\u2019s like games such as Bubble Bobble, where you run around a single screen avoiding or chasing enemies in a maze.\u00a0 I love those kinds of games.\u00a0 You play as a pair of fairy girls who have to rescue their mom or something.\u00a0 You shoot out a beam that traps enemies, and then you toss them over your head a few times to defeat them.\u00a0 You can also press up and the button to create a makeshift ladder.\u00a0 The Game Boy version seems to have better controls, but it\u2019s harder because there are no continues!\u00a0 This is one of the better games on here.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Skip and Friends<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You view this new game in an overhead perspective and can switch between three characters to get them to the exit in a maze.\u00a0 Kind of like The Lost Vikings except not fun.\u00a0 One character can scream, one can boost forward with a rocket, and one can fire a light beam.\u00a0 Oh yeah, and they\u2019re\u00a0 all animals.\u00a0 Since you can\u2019t see the whole map, it can be easy to mess up and get stuck.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Smart Mouse<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You\u2019re a mouse who must push blocks to squish critters that come from the sewer lids.\u00a0 So yeah, it plays like Pengo except way more clunky.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Snakky<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s an 8-bit game where you are a snake and must move around and eat enough fruit to pass a level.\u00a0 When you eat a piece of fruit, you grow a little bit longer.\u00a0 You must avoid walls and biting yourself.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Soldam<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This Game Boy puzzler is similar to Tetris, but the pieces you maneuver are black and white dots.\u00a0 You must clear out lines of the same color.\u00a0 I\u2019m not sure how you get them to change from black to white.\u00a0 The game is all in Japanese, so I don\u2019t know if it\u2019s following rules from games like Othello or Go. \u00a0This would be a very fun game if I knew what I was doing.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Son Son<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This is the Famicom version of one of Capcom\u2019s very first arcade games.\u00a0 It\u2019s loosely based on the Journey to the West tale with the Monkey King.\u00a0 You hop up and down platforms, but everything else about the game is like a 2-D shooter.\u00a0 It\u2019s actually kind of fun in a simple way.\u00a0 Since it\u2019s the NES version, the music is messed up due to emulation with Capcom NES games on here.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sumo Slam<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In this new game, you play as a Sumo wrestler on a raft.\u00a0 You automatically rotate around, and push the button to go forward, like a RC car.\u00a0 There is a mode where you just collect sushi on the raft, but there is another mode where you must push other Sumo guys off the raft.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Super Earth Defense Force<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This is an SNES 2-D side scrolling shooter.\u00a0 I remember renting it once.\u00a0 It\u2019s all right, but not as good as other SNES shooters like Gradius 3, U.N. Squadron, or Darius Twin.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Super Noah\u2019s Ark<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As an unlicensed SNES game, this one is actually pretty legendary.\u00a0 It uses the SNES Wolfenstein engine but now you\u2019re Noah on the ark and must use a slingshot to fling food at restless animals to make them go to sleep.\u00a0 It\u2019s\u2026interesting.\u00a0 I hear the cartridge version is pretty rare.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sword of Sodan<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In this new game, you choose to play as a male or female barbarian and go left to right defeating enemies.\u00a0 It\u2019s 16-bit in nature, but it\u2019s so clunky and choppy that it\u2019s almost humorous.\u00a0 Oh yeah, lot of blood in this one, too.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Black Bass<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a NES fishing game from Hot-B.\u00a0 The graphics are poor, the music is grating, and it\u2019s hard to figure out how to catch and reel in fish.\u00a0 It\u2019s not very good.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Blue Marlin<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I imagine this is the sequel to The Black Bass.\u00a0 And as all sequels should be, it\u2019s VASTLY improved over the original game.\u00a0 In fact, I\u2019d say it\u2019s actually kind of\u2026good?\u00a0 Yeah, really.\u00a0 The graphics are much better, and it\u2019s actually pretty entertaining to fish.\u00a0 Who knew?<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Ignition Factor<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I hear this SNES game is actually very rare.\u00a0 It\u2019s a top down viewed game where you play as a fireman and must enter building mazes to put out fires and rescue people.\u00a0 There was a Japan-only sequel on the PlayStation called The Firemen, and you can actually download and play it on PSN. \u00a0I even reviewed it a while back. Even though The Firemen is all in Japanese, I\u2019d say it\u2019s a better game than the original.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Totally Rad<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In Japan, this game is TOTALLY different than what we got in the US.\u00a0 I guess they felt they needed to make it more \u2018radical\u2019 for US audiences. \u00a0You run, jump, and shoot in 2-D platforming levels.\u00a0 It has some nice parallax scrolling for a NES game, but it\u2019s also really hard and not in that fun Mega Man way.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Varth: Operation Thunderstorm<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>OK this one\u2019s hilarious.\u00a0 It\u2019s a 2-D shooter game from Capcom where you pilot planes over land, but it\u2019s one of those arcade games where the screen is tilted vertically.\u00a0 I guess they figured it wouldn\u2019t make much difference to kids since you can just see the game fine on its side.\u00a0 I suppose you could tilt your TV and play it in \u2018tate\u2019 mode.\u00a0 I think that\u2019s the correct term for that.<\/p>\n<p><strong>World Reborn<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a new 16-bit 2-D shooter from Piko Interactive.\u00a0 It\u2019s a bit amateurish looking and the sprites are a bit too big, but other than that, it\u2019s not too bad.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Yang Warrior Family<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Another new Piko Interactive game.\u00a0 This is a 16-bit side scrolling beat \u2018em up featuring Chinese warriors.\u00a0 You can choose from four playable characters, including a cool female fighter.\u00a0 The hit detection is a bit off, but otherwise this is one of the better Piko games on here.\u00a0 The title screen in the game has a different title than what\u2019s on the menu screen, though.\u00a0 In the game, it\u2019s called Generals of the Yang Dynasty or something, with an even longer subtitle!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Zippy Race<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In this early Famicom title from Irem, you race as a motorcycle on a 2-D vertically scrolling road and must avoid cars.\u00a0 I imagine the HUGE sprites were a big selling point for this game, but it also makes things very hard to avoid.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Zooming Secretaries<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Last but not least, I\u2019m not sure if this was a Japan only Famicom title or a new 8-bit creation.\u00a0 But in this game, you play as a secretary (I think they prefer to be called Administrative Assistants now).\u00a0 You run around single screen ladders and platforms and try to answer phones before they stop ringing.\u00a0 But first you must run to a file cabinet with a picture on it, and then you can answer the phone with a matching picture.\u00a0 In later levels you must avoid obstacles like your boss who will slow you down if you walk near him.\u00a0 If you miss too many calls, you\u2019ll be fired and it\u2019s Game Over.\u00a0 But if you continue, they\u2019ll say you\u2019re hired again!\u00a0 This game would actually be some silly fun if they gave you a little more time to answer the phones!<\/p>\n<p>And those are all the games on the Retro-Bit Generations console!\u00a0 Let me know if you have any questions.\u00a0 I have to say that while it does have a lot of interesting games, it\u2019s really not worth the price I spent on it.\u00a0 Oh well, hopefully I won\u2019t be tempted next time I see one of these multi-game consoles.\u00a0 Later!\u00a0 &#8211;Cary<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>OK so we\u2019re finally at the last part of my look at the games on the Retro-Bit Generations console.\u00a0 Here you can expect to see everything from Rod Land to Zooming\u2026Secretaries?!?
