{"id":17348,"date":"2018-01-08T00:01:40","date_gmt":"2018-01-08T00:01:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.gamerdad.com\/blog\/?p=17348"},"modified":"2017-12-26T14:40:59","modified_gmt":"2017-12-26T14:40:59","slug":"phantom-breaker-battle-grounds-overdrive-switch-ps4","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.gamerdad.com\/blog\/2018\/01\/08\/phantom-breaker-battle-grounds-overdrive-switch-ps4\/","title":{"rendered":"Phantom Breaker Battle Grounds Overdrive (Switch, PS4)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gamerdad.com\/blog\/phantom_box\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-17296\" src=\"http:\/\/www.gamerdad.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/PHANTOM_BOX-150x97.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"97\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.gamerdad.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/PHANTOM_BOX-150x97.jpg 150w, http:\/\/www.gamerdad.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/PHANTOM_BOX.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a>Play as one of six chibi anime female archetypes (maid, priestess, schoolgirl) and battle thugs and demons in this retro styled 2-D beat \u2018em up.\u00a0 It\u2019s cartoony, silly, mindless, and pretty fun as well.\u00a0 The game is available to download on Switch and PS4, but reviewed on Switch here.<\/p>\n<p>Play control is easy to learn.\u00a0 Press left and right to go in those directions, and tap the L button to hop in and out of the background.\u00a0 Up lets you jump in the air, and three of the face buttons perform light, medium, and strong attacks.\u00a0 When a meter is full from attacking enemies, you can press the R button for a powerful attack.\u00a0 And that\u2019s all you need to know.<\/p>\n<p>When you beat levels or see a Game Over screen, you\u2019ll earn points from defeating enemies and picking up goodies like coins and gems. \u00a0The points transfer to experience and allow you to gain levels.\u00a0 When you do gain levels, you can choose to divvy out skill points to beef up your attack, defense, and speed, or learn new skills and combos.\u00a0 You can play the game solo in Story Mode, try to get a high score in Arcade Mode, play with up to three other friends in Co-op Mode, or battle each other in Battlegrounds Mode.\u00a0 You can choose to play one of five unlockable difficulty settings, too.<\/p>\n<p>The game as a whole kind of reminds me of Castle Crashers, but it does have a few problems.\u00a0 It\u2019s is pretty repetitive and mindless, and when you get to the later stages, the enemies\u2019 attacks hardly let you get a hit in edgewise as they can gang up on you, even on the easy settings.\u00a0 But for some reason, I still enjoyed this game anyway.\u00a0 It\u2019s just simple fun.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gamerdad.com\/blog\/phantom_screen\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-17297\" src=\"http:\/\/www.gamerdad.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/PHANTOM_SCREEN.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.gamerdad.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/PHANTOM_SCREEN.jpg 500w, http:\/\/www.gamerdad.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/PHANTOM_SCREEN-150x84.jpg 150w, http:\/\/www.gamerdad.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/PHANTOM_SCREEN-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Kid Factor:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Phantom Breaker Battle Grounds Overdrive is rated E-10 with an ESRB descriptor of Fantasy Violence.\u00a0 You can smack enemies around with weapons and other magic attacks, but they just fall over and disappear when defeated.\u00a0 Reading skill is helpful for some of the text, and younger gamers may need help with the tougher stages.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Play as one of six chibi anime female archetypes (maid, priestess, schoolgirl) and battle thugs and demons in this retro styled 2-D beat \u2018em up.\u00a0 It\u2019s cartoony, silly, mindless, and pretty fun as well.\u00a0 The game is available to download on Switch and PS4, but reviewed on Switch here.
