Heroes. It’s a simple arcade game where you are a square and must survive single screen rooms with obstacles represented by flat shapes. Like any great classic arcade game, it’s easy to learn but hard to master. The game is available to download on Switch and PC, but reviewed on Switch here.

The main single player mode is the Campaign mode. There are ten worlds with over ten stages each! Your square can jump, dash in the air, and cling to walls kind of like Mega Man X. You must use those moves to avoid projectiles, homing mines, lasers, and much more. If you can survive the waves of attacks and onslaughts, you’ll pass the level. Usually the gauntlet only lasts less than a minute. The cool thing is that four players can play at the same time, and as long as one person survives, everyone can go onto the next level. By completing worlds, you can unlock things like different color palettes and new modes!

Another mode is Survival, but I haven’t unlocked it yet. The game is so hard that by the time I would unlock it, it would be several months from now and that wouldn’t be good for a review. There are also multiplayer Versus modes for two to four players. These modes include Zones, Battle, Runner, and Catch. But the only one I can unlock right now is Zones. You must stay in a circle as long as you can, and whoever stays in the circles longest, wins the match.

Really the only problem I have with the game is that it’s very hard to unlock everything. The play control is solid and even though it’s hard, it’s fun in a challenging way. My brother, who played some of the modes with me, said it was even kind of relaxing in a way. So while it may not look like much, this is a fun simple little game.

<img loading="lazy" Factor:

Nothing too violent or objectionable here. If your square gets hit by anything, it just explodes into little squares. Reading skill is helpful for some of the menus, but not necessary just to play. Younger players may get frustrated at the high difficulty, though. Flat Heroes is rated E for Everyone.

Sometimes less is more, and that’s the case with Flat Heroes. It’s a simple arcade game where you are a square and must
