{"id":20351,"date":"2020-08-07T00:01:55","date_gmt":"2020-08-07T00:01:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.gamerdad.com\/blog\/?p=20351"},"modified":"2020-07-28T12:57:32","modified_gmt":"2020-07-28T12:57:32","slug":"the-games-of-the-turbo-grafx-16-mini-part-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.gamerdad.com\/blog\/2020\/08\/07\/the-games-of-the-turbo-grafx-16-mini-part-2\/","title":{"rendered":"The Games of the Turbo Grafx-16 Mini: Part 2"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gamerdad.com\/blog\/bonk\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-20343\" src=\"http:\/\/www.gamerdad.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/BONK-105x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"105\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.gamerdad.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/BONK-105x150.jpg 105w, http:\/\/www.gamerdad.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/BONK-210x300.jpg 210w, http:\/\/www.gamerdad.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/BONK.jpg 277w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 105px) 100vw, 105px\" \/><\/a>For the next two parts of the games on the TG-16 Mini, we\u2019re going to look at (mostly) the US releases.\u00a0 Some of the same games are also on the PC Engine Japanese side, but I\u2019ll let you know which ones are like that when we get to them.\u00a0 OK let\u2019s begin!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Alien Crush<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This is a video pinball game and a very good one at that.\u00a0 It has an alien sci-fi theme and is one of the best games on the system.\u00a0 On the Wii, Hudson even made a remake of this game.\u00a0 That\u2019s how popular it was.\u00a0 Too bad this Mini doesn\u2019t have the sequel: Devil\u2019s Crush, which was also good.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Blazing Lasers<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a pretty standard 2-D vertically scrolling shooter, but it was one of the TG-16\u2019s best and they showcased it a lot in commercials back in the day.\u00a0 Only problem I have with it is that if you get hit, you must start the stage over again.\u00a0 Did you know this game was made by Compile?\u00a0 They made other games like Zanac, The Guardian Legend, and the Puyo Puyo series!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dungeon Explorer<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This was the TG-16\u2019s answer to Gauntlet.\u00a0 You can also play the Japanese version on the PC Engine menu.\u00a0 Not sure why you\u2019d want to since the text is all Japanese.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Moto Roader<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a top down F-1 racer similar to Micro Machines, except the controls are different.\u00a0 It would be better, but you have to pick which parts to upgrade with points and you\u2019d better know which ones to get first or you\u2019ll never win.\u00a0 And if any opponent falls behind past the screen, they\u2019ll be warped right to the middle and usually in front of you, so it\u2019s not fair either.\u00a0 Only thing this game has going for it is a pixelated swimsuit babe on the menu screen.\u00a0 And that\u2019s not saying much!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Victory Run<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Hoo boy, if you thought Moto Roader was bad, wait\u2019ll you play this other racer.\u00a0 This has a behind the car view like games such as OutRun.\u00a0 But it moves so slowly!\u00a0 You can also pick parts like in Moto Roader, but it seems to move slow no matter what you do.\u00a0 It\u2019s too bad the Mini didn\u2019t have Namco\u2019s Final Lap Twin game on here.\u00a0 That was a two player split screen racing game based on the arcade game Final Lap.\u00a0 Did you know that Final Lap is actually a sequel to Pole Position?\u00a0 Final Lap Twin also had a cool RPG mode!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Power Golf<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a golf game, that\u2019s all I can say about it.\u00a0 Didn\u2019t really engage me much and it was too easy to hook and slice the ball.\u00a0 As far as golf games go, nothing beats the Mario Golf and Neo Turf Masters series.<\/p>\n<p><strong>R-Type<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This popular shooter looks pretty close to the arcade game.\u00a0 But it\u2019s also super hard and it\u2019s one hit and you die and you must start over at the beginning or a checkpoint. Did you know Nintendo published the arcade version in the US?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Psychosis<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Speaking of shooters, this is a horizontally scrolling one like R-Type, and is just as hard if not harder.\u00a0 It gave me a headache to play because the graphics are so awful.\u00a0 You start each stage with a \u2018broken TV\u2019 static screen, and the garish colors in the levels clash so bad with each other.\u00a0 Just made it hard to look at.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Lords of Thunder<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>One last horizontally scrolling shooter.\u00a0 This one has more of a fantasy theme with RPG elements, too, but it was also confusing and sometimes less is more.\u00a0 Since this used the CD add on, the music is a bit better, though.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ninja Spirit<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You can get ridiculously powered up in this side scrolling hack and slash ninja themed platformer.\u00a0 You can get two shadows following you and long distance sword attacks.\u00a0 But you are also a glass cannon and die in one hit, so you have to be careful and not let that power go to your head.\u00a0 The game kind of reminds me of a cross between The Legend of Kage and Kung-Fu Master.\u00a0 But then, Ninja Spirit was made by Irem, who also did Kung-Fu Master, so that explains a lot.<\/p>\n<p>And that\u2019s all for now!\u00a0 Tune in next time for more US releases on the TG-16 Mini!\u00a0 Later!\u00a0 &#8211;Cary<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For the next two parts of the games on the TG-16 Mini, we\u2019re going to look at (mostly) the US releases.\u00a0 Some of the same games are also on the PC Engine Japanese side, but I\u2019ll let you know which ones are like that when we get to them.\u00a0 OK let\u2019s begin!
