{"id":21493,"date":"2021-08-30T00:01:21","date_gmt":"2021-08-30T00:01:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.gamerdad.com\/blog\/?p=21493"},"modified":"2021-08-06T01:06:05","modified_gmt":"2021-08-06T01:06:05","slug":"metaloid-origin-ps4-switch","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.gamerdad.com\/blog\/2021\/08\/30\/metaloid-origin-ps4-switch\/","title":{"rendered":"Metaloid Origin (PS4, Switch)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gamerdad.com\/blog\/metal_box-2\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-21439\" src=\"http:\/\/www.gamerdad.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/METAL_BOX-150x80.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"80\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.gamerdad.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/METAL_BOX-150x80.jpg 150w, http:\/\/www.gamerdad.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/METAL_BOX.jpg 262w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a>Metaloid Origin takes inspiration from classic 16-bit run-and-gun games, especially Mega Man X.\u00a0 Play as one of three android catgirls (kind of reminds me of Samurai Pizza Cats) and blast robots in more than half a dozen 2-D platform stages.\u00a0 It\u2019s available on PS4 and Switch, but reviewed on PS4 here.<\/p>\n<p>To start you\u2019ll pick from one of three characters.\u00a0 Each has different firepower styles, but otherwise there\u2019s not much to distinguish them.\u00a0 You\u2019ll tackle each 2-D stage in order, with various horizontally and vertically scrolling areas.\u00a0 There is a midboss in the middle and a final boss at the end.\u00a0 Defeated enemies may leave behind energy containers and crystals.\u00a0 These items can also be scattered about the levels as well.\u00a0 Crystals are very important to collect because you\u2019ll purchase new weapons in the subscreens that you can use.\u00a0 And if you lose all your energy and explode, you\u2019ll have to use crystals to continue.\u00a0 While the stages are mostly linear, sometimes they\u2019ll sprawl into multiple paths where you can find hidden giant crystals and new weapons and abilities.<\/p>\n<p>I had a few problems with the game, though.\u00a0 While there are some tutorial text boards at the beginning to explain the basic controls, they don\u2019t explain very well how purchasing and using weapons work in the submenus.\u00a0 And since downloadable only games don\u2019t have instruction booklets, it was kind of hard for me to figure out.\u00a0 Text is also kind of hard to read.\u00a0 Most of the time, the controls are great.\u00a0 You can shoot, switch weapons, jump, and climb certain walls.\u00a0 But dashing took a little getting used to because you have to hold the button down the entire time to do a full dash.\u00a0 And finally, the game gets too hard too quickly.\u00a0 But while this game isn\u2019t as good as the titles it imitates, it\u2019s still a pretty decent classic throwback and probably the best Eastasiasoft game I\u2019ve reviewed so far.\u00a0 Definitely would\u2019ve been one I might have rented back in the day if it were on 16-bit systems.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gamerdad.com\/blog\/metal_screen-2\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-21440\" src=\"http:\/\/www.gamerdad.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/METAL_SCREEN.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.gamerdad.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/METAL_SCREEN.jpg 500w, http:\/\/www.gamerdad.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/METAL_SCREEN-300x169.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.gamerdad.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/METAL_SCREEN-150x84.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Kid Factor:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Metaloid Origin is rated E for Everyone with an ESRB descriptor of Mild Fantasy Violence.\u00a0 You just shoot robots that explode when defeated, and that\u2019s about as violent as it gets.\u00a0 No worse than Mega Man.\u00a0 Reading skill is helpful for the text, and younger gamers may find it too difficult.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Metaloid Origin takes inspiration from classic 16-bit run-and-gun games, especially Mega Man X.\u00a0 Play as one of three android catgirls (kind of reminds me of Samurai Pizza Cats) and blast robots in more than half a dozen 2-D platform stages.\u00a0 It\u2019s available on PS4 and Switch, but reviewed on PS4 here.
