(PS4, Switch)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gamerdad.com\/blog\/cotton_box\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-21538\" src=\"http:\/\/www.gamerdad.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/COTTON_BOX-120x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"120\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.gamerdad.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/COTTON_BOX-120x150.jpg 120w, http:\/\/www.gamerdad.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/COTTON_BOX-240x300.jpg 240w, http:\/\/www.gamerdad.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/COTTON_BOX.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 120px) 100vw, 120px\" \/><\/a>\u201cCotton\u201d is a series of 2-D horizontally scrolling shooters that were very popular in the 90\u2019s during the 16- and 32-bit eras.\u00a0 They star a candy-obsessed witch girl named Cotton who flies on her broom as she shoots down foes in spooky yet silly settings.\u00a0 It\u2019s an example of the \u201cCute \u2018Em Up\u201d subgenre of shooters similar to titles like Twinbee, Parodius, Fantasy Zone, or Ordyne.\u00a0 And now the series is coming back with Cotton Reboot!, based on the original game.\u00a0 Darkness has fallen over a fairy kingdom, and a fairy named Silk enlists witch girl Cotton\u2019s help to save the day (with a bribe of candy, of course).\u00a0 This game is available on PS4 and Switch, but reviewed on PS4 here.<\/p>\n<p>Like in other shooters, move Cotton on her flying broom with the control stick, and hold down the fire button to shoot enemies.\u00a0 Collect gems and glowing objects that look like sake containers to earn points and power up your shots.\u00a0 Another button fires a magic blast, handy for clearing out enemies in tough spots.\u00a0 You\u2019ll collect all sorts of magic to use, from lightning bolts, fire dragons, and more.\u00a0 Defeat huge bosses in over a half a dozen stages.\u00a0 If you get hit, you\u2019ll fly off your broom and lose a life, but you get unlimited continues and start where you left off, so that\u2019s nice.<\/p>\n<p>There are a few modes of play.\u00a0 In Arrange Mode, you\u2019ll play the game with improved graphics and sounds.\u00a0 You can also play the X8600 version, which was a popular Japanese computer at the time of Cotton\u2019s original release.\u00a0 So it\u2019s neat that you can play the original game and see how much they improved or changed in the Arrange version.\u00a0 There\u2019s also a Time Attack Mode where you play a special stage for either 2 minutes or 5 minutes to try and get as high of a score as you can.\u00a0 You can view online leaderboards in Rankings, and change gameplay features in Options.\u00a0 Some of the things you can toggle here include the difficulty and how many lives you have. \u00a0When you beat the game as Cotton, you can then change your character and play as Silk the fairy, although aside from slightly varied shots, they\u2019re not much different.\u00a0 And finally you can view an in-game instruction manual.\u00a0 In the manual they have Cotton and Silk discussing with each other how to play the game, so it\u2019s kind of neat they took the extra mile to do that.<\/p>\n<p>My only problems with the game are very minor.\u00a0 In the Arrange mode, the action can get so hectic sometimes that it\u2019s hard to differentiate between power ups, bullets, and everything else on screen.\u00a0 I\u2019m not sure the original game had it, but a two-player option would\u2019ve been nice.\u00a0 Also I would\u2019ve loved to have seen more games in the series on here.\u00a0 How about other versions of the original game, like the arcade version or even the Neo Geo Pocket Color version, which almost came out to the US because I played it at E3 one year.\u00a0 Or maybe they could\u2019ve added other games in the series, like the sequel or spin-off games on the Super Famicom, SEGA Saturn, or Dreamcast?\u00a0 But even after that, I was pleasantly surprised with this game.\u00a0 It reminded me of those cheapy under-the-radar PlayStation games I used to get, and it made me smile.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gamerdad.com\/blog\/cotton_screen\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-21539\" src=\"http:\/\/www.gamerdad.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/COTTON_SCREEN.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.gamerdad.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/COTTON_SCREEN.jpg 500w, http:\/\/www.gamerdad.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/COTTON_SCREEN-300x169.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.gamerdad.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/COTTON_SCREEN-150x84.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Kid Factor:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Cotton Reboot!
