\"\"<\/a>Chipmonk! is a 2D side scrolling beat \u2018em up where you play as one of three little chipmunks: Gray, Cheeks, or Red, as they beat up (presumably) other bad critters like rats, mice, badgers, porcupines, raccoons, and more.\u00a0 It\u2019s silly and goofy and available on all current consoles and PC, but reviewed on PS4 here.<\/p>\n

There are three modes of play.\u00a0 Adventure is the main quest for one or two players.\u00a0 You can choose Classic where you\u2019ll beat up critters in stages based on the four seasons.\u00a0 The other mode in Adventure is called Revengance and it\u2019s a new quest with different stages and a world map, but is a bit harder than Classic.\u00a0 Both games you get three lives and five continues.\u00a0 Sounds like enough, but the stages do get pretty hard.\u00a0 The other two modes are Duel and Onslaught.\u00a0 In Duel you\u2019ll battle against another player and in Onslaught you\u2019ll fight an endless supply of baddies until you run out of energy.\u00a0 It\u2019s presented like you\u2019re in a bar fight!<\/p>\n

Play control is simple and what you\u2019d expect from this type of game.\u00a0 Use the control stick to move around and the X button to attack.\u00a0 The circle button is context sensitive and will either let you pick up items to throw, or roll dodge out of the way.\u00a0 Gameplay is very similar to Golden Axe.\u00a0 In fact, from time to time there are little flies you can beat up for magic and health, just like the thieves in Golden Axe.\u00a0 When you get magic, you can cast screen clearing spells by pressing the triangle button, also just like Golden Axe.\u00a0 Chipmonk! is decent and serviceable, but the only problem is it doesn\u2019t hold a candle to other recent beat \u2018em ups like Streets of Rage 4<\/strong><\/a> or TMNT: Shredders Revenge<\/strong><\/a>.\u00a0 But if you can\u2019t get enough of those types of games, you may want to check this one out anyway.<\/p>\n

Chipmonk! is rated E-10 with ESRB descriptors of Crude Humor and Fantasy Violence.\u00a0 You beat up on pixelly critters who fall over and disappear when defeated.\u00a0 They scream out \u2018ooohhs\u2019 and \u2018ughs\u2019 when defeated, which is actually pretty silly because the deep voices many have don\u2019t match who they are!\u00a0 I grew up playing games like this and I turned out OK.\u00a0 Reading skill is helpful for some of the text, but not necessary just to play.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
