{"id":24848,"date":"2024-08-26T00:01:08","date_gmt":"2024-08-26T00:01:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.gamerdad.com\/blog\/?p=24848"},"modified":"2024-08-02T23:00:57","modified_gmt":"2024-08-02T23:00:57","slug":"evomon-switch","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.gamerdad.com\/blog\/2024\/08\/26\/evomon-switch\/","title":{"rendered":"EvoMon (Switch)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gamerdad.com\/blog\/evo_box\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-24818\" src=\"http:\/\/www.gamerdad.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/EVO_BOX-150x83.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"83\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.gamerdad.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/EVO_BOX-150x83.jpg 150w, http:\/\/www.gamerdad.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/EVO_BOX.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a>Way back in the 90s when I wrote game reviews for The Dallas Morning News, I got to see first hand how Nintendo was going to market Pok\u00e9mon in the US, and I knew it would be big.\u00a0 So I called my editor and requested that I cover anything Pok\u00e9mon related, and for a few years he kept that promise.\u00a0 I like to say that Pok\u00e9mon helped pay my way through college.\u00a0 Anyway, not only did I get to review and cover everything Pok\u00e9mon related, but also any rip-offs and copies riding the coattails of its popularity.\u00a0 This included things like DigiMon, Monster Rancher, etc.\u00a0 EvoMon on Nintendo Switch reminds me of some of those knock-offs, and it even looks and feels like something that would\u2019ve been on the Game Boy Color or NEO GEO Pocket Color, two handhelds out at the time!\u00a0 In EvoMon, you\u2019ll play mini-games to train and evolve your monsters so they can battle others and you can win badges!<\/p>\n<p>On the main \u2018farm\u2019 screen, you\u2019ll see the monster you\u2019re currently raising.\u00a0 Here you can feed it food you\u2019ve bought, and clean up after its poop.\u00a0 Press the R button to go to your room and view and decorate it, as well as see any awards you\u2019ve won.\u00a0 When you want to train your monster, press the L button and you\u2019ll see a selection of mini-games you can play.\u00a0 These mini-games remind me of early mobile phone titles, or something you\u2019d see in an 80s arcade or WarioWare title.\u00a0 One of the games plays just like Doodle Jump, for instance.\u00a0 Getting high scores on these games will earn you experience points, and sometimes hidden coins, too.\u00a0 When you have enough experience, you can evolve your monster up to two times!<\/p>\n<p>From the farm screen, you can press the B button to pull up a map to travel to different locations.\u00a0 Talk to people and get hints in the Evosquare.\u00a0 Buy food and eggs at the Evoshop.\u00a0 Go fishing and play a super hard mini-game to try and catch fish for food and money.\u00a0 Go on an Expedition and guide your monster through single screen mazes where you can collect items and beat a boss via another mini-game.\u00a0 Battle other monsters by playing mini-games at the Arena.\u00a0 And when you\u2019re monster is defeated, go to the Evolab to freeze it so you can do things like combine it with other frozen monsters to make new eggs for you to hatch and raise.<\/p>\n<p>I have two main problems with this game.\u00a0 One is that the menu interface is clumsy and fiddly.\u00a0 For instance, in order to clean up poop, you have to press the Y button to highlight the scooper icon, and then press the A button to use it.\u00a0 And that\u2019s one of the more simpler functions.
