The Academy has released their noms for Best Animated Feature – usually this came down to a no-brainer. Pixar wins! Except for the year when Shrek beat Monster’s Inc (which is a fact that grows more absurd each year), this has been Pixar’s main category. This year is different. This year there’s lots of competition.

In my mind there are only three contenders here. Pixar’s UP – and amazing film that, for some reason, I liked a whole lot more the first time I saw it. The second time, I liked it a lot, but not as much. Weird. I’ve heard FANTASTIC MR. FOX is amazing and I can’t wait to see it. But to me there’s only one real option. CORALINE. It’s got everything from a wonderfully twisted recreation of Alice in Wonderland that improves on the book immeasurably, while also bringing over some serious scares and memorable moments. My kids and I loved this movie – even if old Button-eyed Mom gives us all nightmares.

She’s a peach she’s a doll she’s a pal of mine

She’s as cute as a button in the eyes of everyone who ever laid their eyes on Coraline”

Here’s the list. Agree? Disagree? Want to put a claim in for 9, Ponyo or Scrooge? Or maybe some obscure film on the list that deserves a shot?
