When childhood dreams come trueナ

Boys [and some girls], think back to your childhood when モWarヤ was a major event in the neighborhood. Kids from all over gathered to battle each other using dart guns, water guns, water balloons, and in extreme cases, BB guns, and rocks. The モbattleヤ would go on for hours (with numerous minor injuries) usually ending in a stalemate at dinner time. Now EA and Dice Games have given all of us the opportunity to relive our childhood with a virtual war game about World War II. The premise is extremely simple. (Great ideas usually are)

The gamer enters a game, picks a side (Axis or Allies), chooses one of five classes, and then goes off to war. The classes are all unique; each with its own weapons and skills. The Scout carries a sniper rifle and binoculars to call in artillery strikes. The Infantry men carry your basic, deadly machine gun and grenades. The Bazooka men have anti-tank rockets. The Medic can heal himself and others on the battlefield. Finally, the Engineer has a rifle, mines, TNT, and can repair damaged vehicles. All are fun and useful, but different enough to create new challenges for whatever class you choose to play as.

The maps are simply excellent. From deserts to green, lush islands. From bombed-out cities to rolling country-sides. Battlefield 1942メs maps are large and exquisitely done. Every map can be played from a variety of styles. Want to be a sniper? Great, no problem on any of the maps. Want to be an attacker or defender? Fantastic, thereメs plenty for you to do. Battlefield 1942 should receive many モkudosヤ for having variety and openness to all their maps, first class all the way.

The use of vehicles is another part of Battlefield 1942 that makes the game standout from other First-Person-Shooter competition. The ability to fly planes, sail ships, use artillery pieces, man fixed machine gun nests, and drive tanks and jeeps makes Battlefield 1942 a true joy play. No other game has pulled off the intertwining of air, sea, and land action so seamlessly as Battlefield 1942. Nary a gaming session goes by that one doesnメt see something hilarious happening because someone crashed a jeep into a plane or accidentally beached the aircraft carrier. The game is full of wonderful mishaps and possibilities.

There are numerous ways to enjoy Battlefield 1942, as well. Thereメs the single player game which is playing the maps with the bots. If you have at least a DSL connection to the internet you can delve into the Battlefield 1942 multiplayer. This is the true モmeatヤ of the game. One will never realize Battlefield 1942メs genius unless playing against other real players. You can, also, play with friends via the internet in a co-op game vs. the computer.

I realized Iメve モgushedヤ all over Battlefield 1942 so far. To be fair, it does have some problems. There are some sound issues that have been around since day one, cheating and hacking has occurred, some graphical glitches, and such. To their credit EA and DICE have released numerous patches since the games release.

Battlefield 1942 is an extremely entertaining action game. It does have some flaws, but those flaws are so out-weighed by its features as to be almost totally negated. Battlefield 1942 is an instant classic that will continue to be enjoyed by thousands for years to come. It is hard to say something is モperfectヤ, but in Battlefield 1942メs caseナit nearly is.

Kid Factor: Thankfully, DICE chose to be light on the gore factor. There are no body parts or モgibsヤ flying all over the place. Whole people do fly 30 feet in the air after an artillery shell lands at their feet, but thatメs different. Blood is not represented unless added via a mod patch. Simulated death, though, is a large part of the Battlefield 1942 experience. It is war after all. Iメve known children as young as 6 play (and play well), but considering the life and death issues represented in Battlefield 1942, Iメd recommend a child should be over the age of 10 before trying their hand at this game. Better yet, a child should be old enough and mature enough to understand the simulated battles they enjoy were real and thousands of brave Americans and other nationalities died for real. Life is not just one big video game.
