Youメd never expect this to be a sports game, with a name like Ribbit King. And a game of golf no less. With frogs instead of golf balls (hence the name, ムfrolfメ). But thatメs what it is, and itメs one of the wackiest games youメll play.In the story mode you play as Scooter, who, with his trusty walking picnic basket, must play frolf to save his planet somehow. Storyメs not important in a game where you catapult frogs around, really. Use your hammer to catapult your frog to the hole. Youメll get a better score if you make it in the hole in fewer strokes, but thatメs where the similarities between this and real golf end. Since you use frogs instead of golf balls, they tend to jump around more and where your ball, er, frog ends up landing is quite unpredictable. Scattered across the courses are obstacles and ムgimmicksメ that can move your frog around and add points to your score. Hereメs how a typical round of ムfrolfメ might go: Your launched frog lands on a spider web, trampolining it high into the air. It lands in some grass, where a snake comes out and bites the frog. Wiggle the control stick to get the frog out of the snakeメs mouth. When the frog lands, it sees a fly and hops after it, which makes it land in some water. Then the frog swims to the other side of the lake. This actually puts you further away from the hole, but swimming and eating flies and activating all those other obstacles actually added points to your score. Plus you get more points for stringing the events together in a combo chain. On the second shot, you land your frog next to an elephant, who stomps the ground and if you hit the A button at the right time, youメll get a boost in your jump afterwards which will land you right next to the hole! Youメll play on wacky courses on five different planets, like a mechanized course or a snowy course. Compete against equally silly players, .like a caveman panda or a robot duck. Characters look like wacked out Animal Crossing citizens. After a successful match, you can use the prize money to buy items, or even new frogs. You can also win bottle cap trophies of all the characters and unlock silly cartoon shorts on a separate disc. Graphics are colorful, but rather simplistic, and sometimes the framerate dips down and gets choppy. Music is happy, chirpy, bouncy fare. Play control is easy to learn, even more so than other golf games because the game uses a two-click swing instead of three like most golf games. Golf enthusiasts may want to stay away from Ribbit King, due to the unpredictable nature of the gameplay, but fans of wacky silly games may want to take a swing at frolf. Kid Factor: With the silly premise, funny characters and simple controls, youメd think that this would be the perfect golf game for very young kids. You donメt have to switch to different clubs and the game starts out incredibly easy. But unfortunately, later on the game becomes overly challenging in an unfair way. Computer players always seem to know how to get the best score later on in the game, and having to wait for their turn gets tiresome. Still, even though other ムsillyメ golf games like Mario Golf are much better games, Ribbit Kingメs budget price may make it worth a look anyway.
