Castlevania: Lament of Innocence
by Wayne Belton
September 19, 2004

Absolutely fascinating storyline, gorgeous graphics, wonderful sound, they even did a good job on the 3D translation.

Reviewed for PS2.

We all know what to expect, reasonable difficulty, beasties of various colors, tight game play & lots of spooky stuff. Again, our friends at Konami deliver. You take the controls as Leon Belmont, an 11th century baron. As usual, somebody goes missing, & being a good & faithful fianc←, Leon casts aside his royal title to find his intended. This one however shifts into rewind, so you can find out why & how the Belmont clan got roped into this job. Absolutely fascinating storyline, gorgeous graphics, wonderful sound, they even did a good job on the 3D translation.

What this lacks in shear magnitude, the game makes up for in great play & better audio & video. The controls are intuitive, & easy to learn. Mash one button three or four times to crank out a very simple combo, or study up on moves that are learned & introduced as you further explore the castle. The only drawback technically speaking is the rather short play. This is not going to be the replay beast the Symphony of the Night (SotN) was. It does have a hidden character & a hidden mode after completing the game once, to entice you back into the castle. Thereメs not the plethora of monsters & items from SotN either. I do have to say, I really like the lessening of Satanic & Occult images in Lament, but I would strongly recommend not letting somebody questioning their faith play this one. Youメll see what I mean when you beat it.

KID FACTOR:
Now hereメs a sticky problem. Itメs rated a well deserved ムMメ. It has the gore, scary images etc. etc. If you have small ones who want to rid the land of evil, send them back to the old school Castlevanias on NES. Heck , even back to the SNES. I would not let my kids play this one, mostly because of the themes that are approached later in the game. It disturbed me & Iメm pretty liberal about such things. Donメt forget the usual sneaky porn on the statuary. If your kid is okay with the blood, guts & explosive Flea Man parts, and not thinking of joining with the Antichrist, It is a fun game, real quick to pickup & start doing the モprettyヤ moves. Mine kids wonメt get a hold of this one for a while.
