What do three teenage girls, a despot with a duck fixation and an alien have in common? They all want to get down and funky! Tecmo proves that it can run the gamut, from super violent and super hard with Ninja Gaiden to goofy and silly with Unison. Unison is a dancing game set 200 years in the future. Unfortunately, Emperor Ducker has decided that dancing distracts from his marvelously hypnotic singing, and therefore dancing is BANNED! So, what's a guy to do? Enter Doctor Dance, who recruits three teenaged girls, Trill, Cela, and Chilly to join in his rebellion and ムair jack' state broadcasts.
![]() Okay, so Dance, Dance, Revolution it is not, but it is a lot of fun! Gameplay consists of following dance routines by moving the two thumb sticks up, down, left right and side to side. Depending on how well you hit your marks you get graded from perfect to a miss. The songs vary from the sugary pop of Aqua with ムBarbie Girl', to Classic anthems like ムYMCA' and ムWe Are Family', and they even throw in ムOPP' from Naughty by Nature. Doctor Dance will give the girls a cartridge that contains the routine for that evening's air jacking, which gives you a chance to preview and then practice the dance. Practice mode is a lot less forgiving than the actual air jacking so if it takes you a few tries to get through practice, keep practicing. Once you've completed the practice successfully, you get to go on to the air jacking where you dance to gain fans and influence the people. ![]() There is a two and three player option (multitap required for 3 players) in which players dance together and the scores for each player are displayed at the end of the routine. What makes it difficult is that unless you are using the same characters the moves are only displayed for one character. This could lead to frustration in younger players that don't have time or attention spans to memorize the routines.
Hey, it's dancing isn't it? Okay, here's the skinny, the dance moves are not very suggestive and neither are the costumes. The best part is the cornball made-up story. This is presented in traditional anime comic style, eyes bugging out, jaws literally hitting the floor, that sort of thing. If you don't like anime or cheesy plot lines, steer clear of this one. One song and a lyric in one other cause concern. The song is OPP, which if you didn't hear of the song back then, stood for other people's property; in other words: promiscuous lifestyle. The other is from Country Grammar by Nelly. There is a smoking reference that is blanked out, 'And smoking themナ' hmmm. Short of those references, the game is clean, silly and your young dance stars can snag some nifty moves. Short length and two-player mode requiring memorization to play different characters reduced the score.
