We briefly interviewed Steve McFarlane about the upcoming return of that nasty squirrel Conker for a preview. He gave us more info than we needed, hence this brief interview! Steve McFarlane is the Lead Artist on Conker: Live & Reloaded GamerDad: So, what's Conker got that other platform games with fuzzy characters don't? Steve McFarlane: Well, first of all I think we need to put a few home truths to bed. I don't think Conker is a platform game, not in the true sense. It's more of an indulgence into the world of gaming; taking elements of all gameplay and mixing them up with timing, comedy, crudity and a large dose of irony, which spits out something really different that just ain't out there. As you play through Conker and I'm sure you will, you'll find that all his exploits within the game intertwine to build a fantastical story that is played out to you in very tasteful cut scenes; beware, these may contain many bleeps, poo bits and abundant amounts of urine (you have been warned). GamerDad: Is it liberating dealing with such a foul-mouthed character?
![]() Steve McFarlane: Oh yeah, about putting things to bed: just to let everyone out there know that Conker does drink copiously now and again, may smoke the odd stogie when in humorous company, might relieve himself when the toilet is full, but never swears in company; he would never want to upset his grandmother. So there it is, Conker always keeps his cool in the game, it's only the other bizarre characters that vent obscenities. Have I deviated from the question?... oh well. Conker looks fantastic, we've worked hard to give the graphics a rendered quality - you know, like 3D movies. We've introduced tons of details into the backgrounds and characters that push the Xbox way beyond its capabilities without blowing it up... we've added more polygons, more animations, and introduced bags more quality which really does set it apart from other platform games. There's one more thing Conker has that no other platform game does: that's Live, and our Live is another game in itself. What, two games on one disk? You bet. Conker Live is the dog's bollocks. Brand new characters, brand new levels and fast-paced third-person shooting gameplay. Oh, you want to know the secret behind Conker's success? It's because he's so cute. GamerDad: The game is going to be Rated M. Normally at this stage a game is Ratings Pending, so I guess you know what the ESRB is going to say? I mean, that's what Conker is all about. What are your favorite reasons for the M rating in the game?
![]() Steve McFarlane: The personality of Conker is that of a normal young adult at a juncture in his life where the odd curve ball is thrown at him, just like you or me. So life is real in the world of Conker and the characters are kinda real, so having that M rating lets me see a furry squirrel blast the heads clean off dismembered zombies in a pool of stinking blood... now that's what it's all about. GamerDad: Indeed!
