Tekken wasn't the first 3D fighting game in the arcade (that title goes to Virtua Fighter), but its flashier graphics and colorful characters made arcade goers take notice. Now in its fifth incarnation, Tekken 5 on the PS2 brings Tekken fans and fighting game pros everything they could want.
Tekken 5 plays just about like every other Tekken arcade game. The face buttons are for left and right punches and kicks. Combining these attacks while jumping, crouching, or charging forward using the directional buttons unleashes a flurry of powerful moves. Mastering these techniques while blocking and countering the opponent's attacks is what makes the game a challenge! All your old favorite fighter characters are back, like Nina Williams, King, even Kuma the bear, as well as some new faces. ![]() In Story Mode you pick from a gaggle of characters and discover why each one enters the King of Iron Fist Tournament. Some want revenge, some want to be reunited with lost love ones, and some just fight for fun. Just watch out for that last boss! He's a doozy! In arcade mode, there is no story, you just fight and fight, raising your rank and earning gold. You can use this gold to buy new outfits, accessories, and colors to customize your characters. Of course, two people can play at the same time against each other. There are also time trial and practice modes, as well as a 3D beat ムem up one-player game called Devil Within. Last but not least is Arcade History mode, where you can play the arcade version of the first three Tekken games! They're not quite as good as the PlayStation versions, but still fun to see how much the series has improved from its blocky roots. Graphics in Tekken 5 are incredible, some of the best you'll see on the PS2. Detailed backgrounds, dynamic lighting, and destructible environments all around. The fighters look good, too. You can almost see the threads on their clothes! Sound and voices are about what you expect from a modern adrenaline pumping fighting game. With tons of characters and other secrets to unlock (Namco classic arcade game StarBlade!), replay value is through the roof. If there's anything wrong with Tekken 5, it's that beginners can't jump right in like they could with Soul Calibur 2. You really have to know what you're doing or you get yourself whomped! I really stink at fighting games, so there's only one character I can beat the last boss withラon Easy Mode, no less (Asuka Kazama is who I used, in case you care). But if you're a 3D fighting game pro, there's a lot to enjoy in Tekken 5. ![]()
Tekken 5 is a fighting game, so naturally it's violent. There's no blood, just purple and red flashing cloud things when you hit each other, but the moves are pretty painful looking. You smack someone up against the wall and they fall down, writhing in pain. Did I hear bones cracking when she did that throw move? Tekken 5 also earns its Teen rating with light cursing, scary images, and sexual themes (some of the lady fighters' outfits are rather revealing). So this one's definitely for teens and up. However, my little brothers are really into martial arts and even though most of them aren't teenagers yet, I'd still let the older ones play Tekken 5 under my supervision since they've seen all this stuff before.
