Namco, makers of games like Pac-Man and Soul Calibur, have been in the game business for a long time and have amassed quite a collection of games. Namco is no stranger to putting many of their old classics in a collection, and now they've done it for the PSP. This may be the portable's best game yet.
Choose from almost two dozen arcade classics. The full list includes: Pac-Man Ms. Pac-Man Galaga Galaxian Rally-X New Rally-X Dig Dug Dig Dug 2 Xevious Bosconian Motos Mappy Grobda Rolling Thunder Tower of Druaga Dragon Buster King and Balloon In addition, there are four "arranged" games: Pac-Man, Dig Dug, New Rally-X, and Galaga. These arrangement titles are different from the arranged games found in past Namco Museums, but the idea is still the same. Each classic features updated graphics and sounds, more levels and mazes, new power ups and enemies, plus boss battles. ![]() You can adjust the difficulty, extra lives and more for each game, as well as the screen size. You can choose to have a pixel perfect ratio with letterboxes, or stretch the screen to cover the wide viewing area on the PSP. On some games, you can even rotate the screen and play your PSP on its side. It's a little awkward, but more accurate for playing those games that originally had a vertical monitor in the arcade. With the arranged titles, you can use the wireless functions of the PSP to compete with up to four players simultaneously (hence the name: Battle Collection). You can also send a short demo of an arcade classic to another player. The game saves your high scores and options to memory stick. Graphics and sound on the arranged titles are crisp and clear, and characters are well-animated. While the graphics on the older games look antiquated by today's standards, they still look very nice on the PSP's sharp screen. Play control is easy to get into for all the games. These tried and true arcade classics are perfect for on-the-go gaming. ![]()
Even though the PSP caters to an older audience, Namco Museum Battle Collection is safe for kids of any age. These classics are simple and easy to get into, and no reading skill is required to play. There's little to no violence in most of these games. Even the ones that are more violent aren't depicted realistically because of the basic graphics. The most violent title would probably be Rolling Thunder because you can shoot bad guys with a gun. But they just bowl over and disappear with a muffled "argh". There is no blood. With more than 20 games, kids won't get bored for a while.
