That mean space invader Block-O has come to Earth to turn all things round and cute into boring squares. He lands in Hello Kitty's hometown, chases all her friends away, and wreaks havoc in general. Just as Block-O's army is about to pounce on Hello Kitty, her cool frog friend Keroppi teleports her to his secret lab. There he gives her a special pair of roller blades and a magic wand that can stop those blocky baddies. Now it's up to Hello Kitty to save her friends and family and teach that mean ol' Block-O a lesson!
Hello Kitty: Roller Rescue plays like a 3D beat ムem up like Final Fight or Double Dragon. But instead of punching street thugs with fists, Hello Kitty bonks walking pillowy Tetris pieces with a sparkly wand. Rollerblade around Kitty's hometown, from the adorable amusement park to the oh-so-cute supermarket, clobbering bad guys and rescuing her friends along the way. Some friends you can recruit to help you fight the bad guys as a CPU second player. It's a shame there's no two player supportラthat would make the game ten times as fun. Some of the CPU helpers you can find are a yellow dog thing who throws pudding flan at nasties or a penguin named Badtz-Maru who wields a mean frying pan. Meet all your favorite Sanrio characters, most of which I've never heard of, as you skate your way more than a dozen short and easy stages.

As you rescue her friends and family, Kitty can unlock outfits for you to dress her up in, as well as character profiles, movies, and music. The candy-coated graphics are bright and colorfulラalmost nauseatingly soラand the music is happy and bouncy, even during boss battles. Kitty has several jumping moves and special attacks at her disposal, but play control is easy to learn and execute anyway. Camera angles can be awkward sometimes, but the game is so easy and forgiving that this really isn't much of a gameplay problem. Experienced gamers can beat this game in a short afternoon, but there's some replay value to be had unlocking all the outfits and other goodies. Fans of Sanrio will love Hello Kitty: Roller Rescue.
The game plays like a beat ムem up, but violence is only the minimal, cartoony kind. Bonk meanies with your heart-shaped wand and shoot down bosses with cannons that fire pineapples. Nobody dies. Everyone either disappears or just runs away. Reading skill is helpful but not required for the tutorials, mission briefings, and character dialogues. The game is notoriously easy. It's actually harder to lose all your energy and fail the mission than it is to win. Hello Kitty: Roller Rescue may be short and not very difficult, but Sanrio nuts and little girls will really enjoy this game anyway. In a world where video games are maturing right along with the players, it's nice to see that game makers are still producing quality kids' titles made specifically for them. They can feel like they're playing a "big kid's" game!
