Luffy is an energetic boy with a dreamラa dream to become a pirate. Not just any pirate, he wants to be King of All Pirates and find the biggest treasure in the world. But he'll have to cope with some, well, unusual problems along the way. First off, as a child, Luffy accidentally ate some magical Gum Gum Fruit, and now his whole body is made out of rubber. He can stretch his limbs and swell up like a balloon, but he also can't swim. What good is a pirate who can't swim? Luffy will also need a crew, and he finds the strangest characters to be his shipmates, like Zolo the swordsman and Nami the navigator. Can Luffy fend off rival pirates and a corrupt Navy to become King of the Pirates?
Based on the popular anime and Japanese manga comic, One Piece for Game Boy Advance is a 2D side-scrolling beat ムem up. Play as Luffy and attack your foes with stretchy punches. Swing yourself around poles like a slingshot to rocket through waves of bad guys and find hidden treasures. Collect bombs to blow up secret passages, and inflate like a balloon to reach high places. When you're in a pinch, call upon one of your crewmates for a special attack, like Zolo's swords or Usopp's slingshot. Clobber rival pirate bosses, some of which have eaten Gum Gum Fruit themselves and have special powers of their own. The characters on screen are large and well animated, with fluid movements that reflect their personalities from the cartoon. Play control is fairly responsive and there are plenty of moves at your disposal, although the occasional blind jump into a bottomless pit can get pretty annoying. Fans of the One Piece anime and manga may enjoy this GBA game, but overall it offers nothing extraordinary or fun to the tired 2D platform genre. ![]()
Young fans of the anime will enjoy the cartoony antics and basic gameplay. Reading skill is helpful, but not necessary as the dialogue in the game is so basic it's almost funny. Violence consists of you knocking out cartoony pirates with rubbery punches. If you're okay with your kids watching the anime on Cartoon Network, they're okay to play this game.
