Midway has been making popular electronic arcade games for more than two decades now, and they're no stranger to putting their classics on compilation discs for home video game consoles. Their past two Midway Arcade Treasures assortments featured a wide variety of classics, but for their third outing they are trying something different. Every game in the third installment is an arcade racing game, spanning the late 80's/early 90's to just a few years ago.
Hydro Thunder is a modern 3D fast-paced boat racing game, while Off-Road Thunder takes the same idea and uses mud and monster trucks instead of boats and water. Other modern racers include San Francisco Rush: The Rock Alcatraz Edition and San Francisco Rush 2049. Race Drivin', the sequel to Hard Drivin', features rudimentary 3D graphics with stunt and race tracks. Another early 3D polygonal game, S.T.U.N. Runner, has futuristic fast racing and shooting. Badlands is an overhead racer like the classic Super Sprint, except that it has a post-apocalyptic setting and you can shoot weapons at the other cars. Finally, another top down Super Sprint-style racer, Super Off-Road, features dirt and mud races with a Track Pack for extra circuits. There are a lot less games in this collection than in previous ones, but many of these games are more recent and therefore, bigger and more complex. Graphics and audio seem pretty close to their arcade counterparts, although some of the games on here, like Hydro Thunder, are the Sega Dreamcast versions instead. While it's commendable that Midway did something different with a ムthemed' arcade collection pack, many of these racing games lose something in the translation when brought to the consoles. These games were fun in the arcade because you got to use a big steering wheel and sit in rumbling seats with speakers, and it loses something when you bring the games to the home. Plus, there's not a wide variety of gamesラif you don't like racing games, you're out of luck with Midway Arcade Treasures 3. If you do like racing games, these arcade classics still probably won't hold your interest for very long. ![]()
Since these games have a pick-up-and-play nature about them, your kids won't have too much trouble figuring things out. While many of the games feature explosions and car crashes, the violence is portrayed in an unrealistic manner, no worse than when your kids crash cars on their Hot Wheels? tracks. But with all the more modern and fun racers available, your kids may be disinterested with the older titles on Midway Arcade Treasures 3.Since these games have a pick-up-and-play nature about them, your kids won't have too much trouble figuring things out.
