That cantankerous crocodile K. Rool has ape-napped Donkey Kong and his pal Diddy. Can Dixie Kong save them and keep up with her baby cousin Kiddy Kong while teaching K. Rool and the Kremlings a lesson? Donkey Kong Country 3 is a port of the Super Nintendo classic, featuring eye-popping pre-rendered graphics and solid yet basic 2-D platforming gameplay.
Alternate between Dixie and Kiddy to bonk Kremlings and make precarious leaps across obstacles. If one gets hit, they run off, leaving the other to go solo until he or she finds another DK barrel. Dixie Kong can use her ponytail like a propeller to slow her descent after a jump. Kiddy Kong, being big for his age, can break weak floors. Collect bananas for extra lives and coins to play mini-games and unlock secret areas. Explore lakes and rivers, dangerous forests, caverns and mountains on your quest to rescue your Kong pals. Each level has a special challenge you have to overcome, whether it's climbing on ropes avoiding TNT barrels or racing across a riverbank before a swarm of bees gets you. Sometimes you play as one of Dixie's animal pals, like a parrot, swordfish, or a baby elephant who can suck in distant objects and squirt out water with her trunk. ![]() The pre-rendered graphics look great on the GBA, but not as good as the Super Nintendo version. Because of the GBA's smaller screen and lower resolution, visuals are a bit muddier. The levels are exactly like the SNES game, but include a bunch of new mini-games and fetch quests, most of which don't add anything fun to the updated classic. Worst of all, the music has been totally changed for all the levels and worlds, and it's not as good as the original audio. Play control is pretty responsive but some of the more advanced moves like Kiddy's water skip can be tricky to pull off. Donkey Kong Country 3 certainly isn't the most original platforming game, but the challenge and variety of gameplay still make it a fun romp for GBA owners.
Violence is cartoony and minimal. You just hop on Kremling gators' heads and they just jump off the screen. If your monkeys get hit, they either run away or fall down for a short cry before giving the level another go. Reading skill is helpful for understanding the mini-games, but not necessary for playing through the levels. Younger players may get frustrated as there are some pretty challenging stages later on. But most kids will enjoy the basic gameplay and entertaining Donkey Kong characters.
