The new Mermaidman and Barnacle Boy movie is being filmed right in Bikini Bottom, and Spongebob and all his friends are getting into the act. But when the two aging heroes-turned-movie stars come up missing, Spongebob, Patrick, Sandy, and Squidward form a search party to find them. The big console versions of this title play like a multiplayer party game like Mario Party, but the GBA version is a single player action game instead.

In this 2D platform game, play as Spongebob, Patrick, Sandy, or Squidward. Switch characters at any time to use their special skills, although mostly any one of them can get past a stage just fine. Spongebob can puff up and float for short distances. Patrick throws ice cream cones as weapons and has a butt stomp for smashing breakable floors. Sandy can attack foes with ease with her karate moves. And Squidward can blast long distance enemies with sour notes from his clarinet. An occasional mini-game pops up from time to time to break up the 2D action. In these mini-games, you catch falling Krabby Patty ingredients to make the famous burger, take on boat racing challengers, and even play a Dance Dance Revolution-style button pressing rhythm game. Collect stars to buy extra lives and more mini-games.

Background graphics aren't very impressive, but the stars of the show are the big character sprites and their fluid movements. Seeing Squidward walk with all of his tentacles is a sight to behold. And their animations reflect their personalities, too. For instance, when a character completes a level he or she does a victory danceï¾—except Squidward. He sarcastically puts on a party hat and noisemaker and rolls his eyes as if to say, "Whoop-de-doo." Play control is also extremely solid but the low challenge level makes this game best for younger gamers only.

If you set it on the lowest difficulty level you have a hard time actually losing lives! Seriously, you will not die. Mild, cartoony violence is the order of the day here. Reading skill isn't necessary unless you want to know what the characters are saying to each other. This is a pretty decent game for very young Spongebob fans.
