Using the same robot blasting, choose your own stage and steal the bosses' weapons gameplay as the original games, the X titles featured faster, more challenging action and a darker storyline. Now you can experience the one that started it all in a brand new, on-the-go way on the PSP.

Mega Man Maverick Hunter X is a remake of the very first Mega Man X game, which many consider to be the best. The graphics may look 3D, but the gameplay is all strictly side-scrolling action. In typical Mega Man fashion, you choose the order of stages and beat the bosses to steal their weapon. Each boss is weak against another's weapon, so it's up to you to figure out the most effective attack. And just like the 16-bit game, stage layouts change depending on who you defeat, such as Flame Mammoth's stage being frozen over after beating Chill Penguin.

Aside from the graphics, little has changed in this remake. Enemy placement and movement are spot on, but Capcom did change the stage layouts ever so slightly and moved around the hidden skill-enhancing armor capsules just to keep veterans on their toes. There are some cool unlockables, too. After beating the game you can watch a high-quality anime cutscene explaining the backstory of the Mega Man X games that is more than twenty minutes long. Plus you can play through the game as a second character: Mega Man X's nemesis Vile. Mega Man fans packing a PSP won't want to pass up this excellent remake.

Even so, the difficulty may be a bit frustrating for very young gamers. The animated cutscene you unlock after beating the game is a little more graphically violent, and shows robots getting skewered by swords and getting their ムfaces' burnt off. For these reasons, Mega Man Maverick Hunter X is best suited for older kid gamers.
