Boxing is ironically nicknamed "The Sweet Science" and no game has better captured the mix of physicality, strategy, athleticism, and brutality of the sport like EA's Fight Night series. Why? Because of the controls. The game uses the two analog sticks and triggers to simulate how boxers punch, block, and dodge (avoid the PSP version for this reason - it lacks the needed controls). This makes it as tactical, intense, and realistic a matchup as actually lacing up the gloves and stepping in the ring yourself.

Click to learn more about GamerDad's Kid Factor review section. Boxing is brutal, despite the padding, and this game and series in no way shrinks from that violence. There's a benefit to this, because for most kids, their exposure to fist-fighting involves Hollywood actors (or pro-wrestlers) who can fake it. A game like this drives home - brutally - that being punched takes a real toll on the human body. Also the game features a "cut man" mode (it can be handled automatically) that challenges players to fix the damage done between rounds. This really drives the point that two people trading blows has real effects on the human body. Most games (and movies) never come close to showing the consequences.

The game is as bloody and violent as the sport so a good guide for parents is: Would you let your kids watch a real boxing match? That's why we're giving the game our 14+ Seal despite the blood and gore.

It should be noted that the Next Gen consoles up the ante considerably. Meaning, in High Definition the warping effects used to in the replays look a bit silly and unrealistic. The less technologically advanced versions, counter-intuitively, look more realistic.

The PS3 has a cool new first person mode.
