Mario is an icon, the Mickey Mouse of the videogame industry, and most adult gamers today cut their teeth rescuing the Princess from the claws of Bowser and his turtle and mushroom minions. Mario went 3D close to a decade ago, but fans still pine for the old two-dimensional side-scrolling action that launched a genre and put Nintendo on the map. We love it so much - this site has made it its mission to promote the many Super Mario Bros. re-releases for the Game Boy Advance (and we still recommend those heartily).
Well, there's good news for fans of the classics and even those who somehow missed all the Mushroomy goodness, New Super Mario Bros. is here and it marks a triumphant return to the classic 2D roots that have captivated gamers, young and old, for the better part of two decades now. New Super Mario Bros. plays just like its esteemed predecessors: Run, jump, land on the enemy while collecting coins, power-ups like mushrooms (including one that makes Mario so enormous he can kick over those green pipes that festoon the landscape), flowers, and more. Gorgeously rendered in full 3D and making limited use of the stylus (you can now store a power-up for later use) the game offers all the fun and addictive play of the original titles, with the spit-shine and technology of today. It's a must own for the Nintendo DS, for kids six, to ninety-six. It's'a Mario, and it's'a brilliant! ![]()
Super Mario Bros. games are perfect introductions to gaming for small children (4 and up depending on co-ordination and patience level) and the new DS version brings the visuals up to date without sacrificing any of the remarkable gameplay the series is known for. It teaches timing, co-ordination, and challenges players to explore and use Mario's skills to find all sorts of hidden coins and goodies throughout the sprawling, varied, and iconic gameworlds.
It's Mario, so the violence consists of Mario jumping on bad guys or shooting them with balls of power (the flower gives Mario this power). It's safe, friendly, fun, and gives kids an introduction to the charms of classic gaming all in a modern wrapper. It's a must own for the system (and could have been released for the GameCube itself as far as we're concerned - it's that good-looking and compelling) and we're proud to give it out highest recommendation.
