Now you or your child can play that funky music, DJ-style, in your own living room with Konami's arcade hit, Beatmania. This is another one of those musical rhythm games, like Donkey Konga for GameCube, or Guitar Hero, that challenges players to push buttons in time with the music and intricate puzzle-like patterns the game throws at you. These kinds of games don't usually imitate playing music, but they make you feel like you're playing the tunes and Beatmania is no exception. The only problems with the game are that the turntable disc controller is a bit stiff (really, shouldn't it be spinning?) and the music selection is an ... acquired taste. For fans of electronica, trance, and other forms of ambient beat music (and also fans of rhythm games and novelty controllers) will love the unique challenge and gameplay of Beatmania.
Music and rhythm games require a lot of gamers. Children especially can benefit by learning to follow a beat, mastering the muscle memory and hand/eye co-ordination required by these complex controllers, and expanding their minds by hearing new kinds of music, while feeling like they're actually playing it. The song selection here is inoffensive but the sensual and booty-shaking beats (not to mention the challenge level) lead us to recommend this game for players over 10.
