Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter was described as "easily one of the finer moments in these early days of the Xbox 360", but the other console versions are just scaled back versions that removed much of what made it great. This decent PC version was developed by a different company. It's a first-person squad-based shooter with the focus on an even larger single-player campaign. Controls for player and squad commands are intuitive and easily customized, and the squad members react intelligently and follow orders well. Online multiplayer is lacking in choice and implementation. It also tends to be unstable. These larger mission areas, greater interactivity and better intelligence require a very powerful computer and graphics card to run adequately. If you have a PC capable of running it, Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter is a lengthy and enjoyable game.

The scenario of Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter places you in the middle of a North American summit meeting in Mexico that is attacked by rebels and turns violent quickly. Although the game is rated T, I was initially concerned that it would deserve an Adult game seal due to the intensity of the situations and constant peril facing you and your team. There is not an abundance of blood or gore, but the tension level of house-to-house fighting seems extreme at times and you depend on your squad-mates just as they depend upon you. However, even if one of your teammates ムfalls' during battle or you sustain near-critical damage, you all are restored to full health between missions and occasionally during a mission. This takes away much of the realistic impact. You have intense and desperate situations, but you know your squad will all make it, and the game reminds you that it is, in fact, just a game.
One great thing the PC version adds is a top-down tactical map that allows you to issue commands to your squad much like a strategy game. For those new to squad-based games, this is an excellent way to look at the action and understand small squad tactics and things like flanking, cover and advancing strategies. This is not an educational tool, but it adds a dimension of thought and planning not generally available in these types of shooting games. The same concerns regarding online multiplayer Dave Long mentioned in the Xbox 360 review apply here as well. The fact that the maps and game modes are more limited restricts the ability to find games, making online behavior more of an issue because you accept whatever game is available. Some people find great pleasure in behaving badly online, so you need to make sure your kids are aware of the dangers. This review edited by Dave Long Comments? Chat about it in our forums!
