Lemmings is a venerable gaming franchise now landing on the PlayStation Portable in an updated version of the original game with plenty of extras. It's been faithfully ported to the PSP and graphically enhanced. A whole series of new levels have been added, as well as an editor and downloadable content. For fans of puzzle games, it offers many hours of quirky and challenging gameplay testing you at every turn.
The game is about action-based puzzle solving. Your simple goal is to save a certain number of Lemmings by assigning some of them jobs to aid in clearing the way to the exit. Early areas consist of a quick assessment and simple action. Later you need to figure out more complex strategies and by the end you replay levels again and again before clearing them, happy to get by with the bare minimum Lemming count. There is plenty of longevity between the original levels, the new areas and the ability to create and share levels over the internet. It's a frustratingly difficult yet charming game. ![]()
PROTECT THE CHILDREN!!! Don't let your kids near this game or they will aspire to be the wanton, seemingly suicidal creatures they see on screen! Seriously though, the impact this innocuous game has is fleeting and whimsical, as evidenced by my kids on a hike walking back and forth between trees mindlessly and pretending to be lemmings with total disregard for themselves until the other assigned them a role such as digger or basher. This charming and harmless game is beautifully easy to learn and wonderfully friendly to play. There is nothing offensive. Even as you lose lemmings there is nothing morbid or scary, just an opportunity to go back and try again to do better.
The thing I like best is how it forces you to adapt to situations. Watching my kids play made it clear that this is more than just a puzzle gameラit's like a hybrid of puzzle and real-time strategy game. You succeed by quickly assigning tasks to complete parts of a puzzle without losing too many units to get to the next bit of danger. The fact that your units are cute little green-haired lemmings makes it more appealing to keep them alive, and makes it entertaining for all ages. This review edited by Dave Long Comments?
