Just when you thought you vanquished evil, Dungeon Siege II: Broken World lets you know that you only took care of one of the minions of evil. Your task in this expansion is to defeat higher and higher minions before getting to the real final battle.
Everything is nearly identical to the original. The only additions are a couple of hybrid classes. These new classes are good starting points, but you shape your development path through your actions just as you did in the original. The minimum starting level is 39, and you can choose from several quality pre-made characters or import your own to begin this quest. If you finished the original game and spent any extra time leveling, your character is at a much higher level than this expansion expects making loot and experience from battle unsatisfying. Even choosing a pre-made character gives you an equipment set better than the vast majority of what you find. You run around, kill everything, get to the disproportionately difficult boss and die a few times before taking it downラrepeat. There are numerous side-quests available to help break things up, but most resolve naturally if you venture off the linear main path. This new quest is also quite short. You can complete everything possible in well under a dozen hours and are left with little incentive to go back. ![]()
The original Dungeon Siege II review noted that despite earning its M-rating through tons of bloody battles with exploding enemies and gore, the fantasy setting and infrequent human battles tempered the intensity of the battles. Dungeon Siege II: Broken World is darker in theme and setting because it occurs after the cataclysm that closed the original game. There is a constant air of desperation and peril making battles more intense and boss fights seem more important as a result. Because you are at a higher level, your destructive force is on display more often. So while you obliterated enemies sending body fragments flying in all directions occasionally in the original game, it now happens in pretty much every battle.
There is also an even greater emphasis on the racial struggles. Everyone is vying for power and just trying to survive. While there needs to be some cooperation between the races, and that comes through in your character, it is never achieved through open understanding or dialogue. It's fine thematically but adds to the dark, dismal and mature tone of the game. This review edited by Dave Long Comments? Chat about it in our forums!
