Dead Rising finally brings the undead hordes to videogames. The plot is simple, you play a photojournalist who bribes a helo-pilot into flying him into an American city cordoned off by the military because of "riots." After a spin over the block, and a lot of glimpses at the horror in store (people being attacked, eaten, etc.,) the helo pilot lands you atop a mall and promises to return in 72 hours.
So, for 72 hours (it moves faster in the game), you've got to explore the zombie infested mall, rescue human beings, perform timed missions, kill the walking dead using an insane variety of gruesome weaponry (from guns, to baseball bats, to lawn mowers), and maybe take a few photos while you're there. The game is very replayable, even after you've uncovered the plot and faced the true evil behind the carnage. The photo option is great, it provides experience (which makes you stronger) while encouraging you to get close to the action without becoming one of them. The combat, and there's lots of it, leaves something to be desired (controls aren't nearly responsive enough) but overall it works and the setting, music, and graphics are terrifying and exhilerating. Only problem? The save points are way too far away and this results in a lot of unnecessary repetition and frustration. The game also desperately needs multiplayer because... nobody wants to face the undead hordes alone!
Dead Rising is a zombie apocalypse movie come to life. So, yeah, it's extremely gory, gruesome, and often tasteless (taking pics of zombie cleavage will net you "EROTIC" points while taking a shot of a zombie biting someone gets you "HORROR" points). Players will enjoy using the wide variety of weapons and parents can take some solace in the fact that the game does encourage rescuing the innocents and survival, over carnage, even if the carnage is the entire point of the game.
The game IS a zombie movie, so the best advice for parents is: Do you let your kids watch movies like Dawn of the Dead, 28 Days Later, and Land of the Dead? This game is no worse than those movies. Base your decision on that. Comments? Chat about it in our forums!
