Madden returns for another season with only minor improvements to all platforms except the Xbox 360 (last year's debut was essentially a glorified demo). Expect the same action, control, new rosters, and some new defensive tricks that grant savvy players better control of how they hit and how they can influence the play. On offensive expect better running control (including the new Highlight Stick option that makes people like LT even freaky-deekier.
The 360 version has what looks like a whole new graphics engine, one built for HD (it also makes the text really small for regular TVs). The biggest bonus here, aside from the breathtaking animations, is the larger playing field. It's much easier to return kicks for realistic yards (now you can make the first guy miss). Missing are the fatigue model (you can get it from Xbox Live I think) and most of the franchise options. ![]()
Videogame football, now more than ever, WILL teach your child about the NFL, the game itself, and how to play it. Even if your kid isn't into Pop Warner, there's still few better, more replayable, or more satisfying competitive experiences than Madden provides. Great for father and son, mom and daughter, friends, and any combination like that.
Parents should know that the game features realistic hits, flying tackles, etc., but never crosses the line into the kind of regrettable accidents that sideline so many NFL stars each year (terrible injuries, watching a guy get on a board and stretcher for 20 minutes, and of course the trouble with the law some players routinely get into). At least with Madden you don't have to worry about a creep like TO influencing your kid. In the game he does what he does best, catch the ball, instead of mouthing off like a spoiled baby. Other Platforms GBA: Not reviewed here NDS: Okay graphics, limited playbook, only decent. PSP: Good graphics but long load times. PC: Believe it or not, this is last year's version. Buyer Beware! Xbox, PS2: Most fully featured but graphics aren't as good as the next gen consoles. Xbox 360, PS3: Best graphics, features, and gameplay but missing most of the career options. Wii: The Wii's graphics are as good as the PS2 and Xbox, and using the remote to pass is kind of cool. PS3: GameCube: Wii: Comments? Chat about it in our forums!
