Available only on Xbox and PlayStation 2 and not in a next-generation guise, NASCAR 07 seemingly suffers from a lack of interest from its development team. The new blurring effect for more "speed" is a silly addition while other additions are barely noticeable. The only standout is in the garage where it's now easier than ever to mess with your car's settings to get acceptable performance on the track. Load times wear you down though and it seems like the developers never expected anyone would actually practice, change some settings and then practice again because that's where the loading really grates.
If you have NASCAR '06 Total Team Control, you really don't need to upgrade to this year's game. NASCAR 07 is essentially the same thing you bought last year. The Rival system is still annoying as heck when you can't help but bump and be bumped by the AI drivers. Watching them steer right into you would make Tony Stewart proud, and NASCAR angry... or would it? The game's presentation emphasizes the way NASCAR more and more seems like an extension of World Wrestling Entertainment, and the way EA pushes it closer to that ideal sinks this series deeper into fantasy and further from the reality of driving a race car. ![]()
Like NASCAR racing on television, this game bombards you and your children with advertising. Everything has a sponsor, from the races themselves to the rewards you earn. After repeated play, you will feel completely exhausted by the advertising. It wears you down and beats on you like a prize fighter, never letting up for a second. When Kenny Wallace finishes giving you the setup for a Dodge Challenge, he's always sure to let you know this game came from "EA Sports, It's in the game!" Please stop.
That's the most offensive thing you'll find in NASCAR 07, but it's probably the least obvious most offensive thing you'll find in any videogame because you probably don't even notice anymore how it pervades everything so completely. If you think it's bad on TV, videogames take it to another level beyond that. Can we go back to when it was about the racing? Nah, probably not. It's also worth noting that the game includes Xbox Live play, so the usual rules of engagement apply there. People use foul language regularly over their headsets and this game is no different. Keep the headset unplugged and be sure to mute player speech if you send junior online to kick some dirty old man rear end. Comments? Chat about it in our forums!
