The ESRB says:
MILD CARTOON VIOLENCE: Bomberman uses explosive bombs to defeat enemies. Once hit, the enemies just disappear. If Bomberman gets caught in the explosion, he just falls down to indicate defeat. For more than 20 years Bomberman has provided explosive arcade action for single and multiplayer mayhem. Now you can play it on the PlayStation Portable. In single player mode, cute little robot Bomberman saves ten planets from peril. Each planet has ten stages and a boss. Run through mazes laying bombs to destroy walls and roving bad guys until you uncover the exit. Bombs explode in a sideways ムX' pattern. You also get power-ups for the bombs like bigger explosions, remote detonators, and the ability to kick bombs at foes, but don't get caught in the explosion yourself! Aside from 3D graphics, this version of Bomberman plays pretty much like any before it, except now the power-ups can be stockpiled for later use. Bomberman is best remembered for its multiplayer modes, where usually up to four people try to bomb the other players out of the maze. In order to play multiplayer on the PSP, up to four people need to have a system of their own, but only one person needs a disc. You can challenge each other nearby with wireless Ad-Hoc play. Unfortunately, WiFi Internet bombing matches aren't available. Graphics are basic and colorful and play control is pretty simple to learn, although having separate buttons for laying, detonating, and kicking bombs makes it a little hard to remember which button does what sometimes. Die-hard Bomberman fans may enjoy this PSP version, but it's really just more of the same. ![]()
Bomberman is a basic arcade-style pick-up-and-play kind of game, and no reading is required. The challenge level gets pretty hard for young gamers later on, though. Even though Bomberman uses bombs to best his foes, those foes simply disappear when caught in an explosion. If Bomberman gets bombed, he just falls down and admits defeat. The repetitive single player mode may get boring for child gamers, and the requirements for multiplayer battles may be too expensive for a group of kids. How many kids do you know who have four PSP's handy? Despite the difficulty securing enough players, youngsters should still like the colorful visuals and classic accessible gameplay.
