The ESRB Says...
Cartoon Violence: Throwing raccoons over fences was the most violent thing I saw. Cartoon Mischief: Squirting milk at other animals, mocking the mailman, animal nightclub City life got you down? Need to get away from it all for some down home fun on the farm? Welcome to Barnyard, a game based on the recent Nickelodeon movie of the same name. You're the new cow in the barnyard, and you have to prove your party instincts to the rest of the party animals. You live the good life on this vegetarian farmラthat's right no meat for this farmer, which is why all the animals like to play and have a good time. Most of the time you run around trying to find things for the other animals, doing chores for them, fetching items, and tests of skill. At night, you head out to Gopher Hill to pick up a few items for the Night Barn and party 'til tomorrow. It's a game packed with other mini-games based around a story. As the latest arrival on the farm, you make up a name and choose the type of cow you want to be and get into the swing of the barnyard. Usually an animal asks you to do something useful around the farm, like finding a group of chicks and returning them home to protect them from the raccoons and coyotes around. Other jobs are just for cash, like a pig asking you to fetch him some ingredients for an apple pie. You need 2 apples, and a bag of flour! Take those items to the kitchen and Pig will cook them into a pie for you. You get 10 Gopher coins for each pie you bake, plus when you return Pig near the pig sty, he rewards you with 50 coins. Some tasks are just for fun. Our personal favorite is "Mock the Mailman". You're shown a set of moves to do and earn points based on how hard and long they are. You also have to keep an eye on the trusty mailman, because if he sees you, you're out and so is he. All these mini-games together are entertaining but the lack of multiplayer brings things downラbut hey, why not just pass the controller? ![]()
There is some basic reading involvedラusually just figuring out the rules to a mini-game. All of the games are goofy, good natured fun. Jumping over swinging pipes of water, bicycle races with other cows, throwing chicks back to the chicken coop and squirting milk at raccoons to protect the farmer's vegetables. Eventually you do take the farmers truck to chase down some of the other cows that stole the neighbor's car, and there is the Night Barn. The Night Barn is where all the animals hang out after hours. You could be picky and call it a bar, but there are no alcoholic or questionable items on the menu. It's just a bunch of party animals hanging out together.
