The ESRB says:
Cartoon Violence: Mini 3D characters falling into little piecesラthere are blasters and lightsabers, but the violence seems scaled down from the other versions of the game. The game seems much less violent than any of the movies. Very often when multi-platform games come to the Nintendo DS, it results in a cut-down version that is the worst possible. Another trend in multi-platform games is that they end up filled with bugs and problems due to needing to meet a rigid release date. It isn't that often that a developer provides completely different versions for each handheld platform and unfortunately in this case the results are severely lacking. Uneven best describes LEGO Star Wars II for DS. Early on it's frustrating but not too bad. In the middle it's pretty good, but by the time you land in Cloud City it bottoms out and never re-emerges. The controls are sometimes problematic, but frankly feel like using the keyboard arrow keys on a PC. As you walk along a narrow angled platform, you alternate buttons to keep from falling off. The camera is a more frequent problem that ranges from adequate to completely uncooperative. This, like everything else, gets much worse in the latter stages of the game. It saddens me to tell you not to buy this game. I've been a tremendous advocate of the LEGO Star Wars games since the first. There are parts of the game that are entertaining, and the ability to play multiplayer wireless co-operatively and also four-player download play from a single cartridge are all attractive. But there are so many problems that much of the game is painful to pass the first time, let alone replay to collect more items. The game is out for eight different platforms, and while this DS game is less awful than what I've seen of the Game Boy Advance version, all of the other versions are really good. Choose one of those instead. ![]()
Perhaps the best thing about the DS version of LEGO Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy is that it is extremely clear that Han blasted Greedo.
Two great things about the LEGO Star Wars games are the simple but fun puzzles and the built-in replayability. There are plenty of simple puzzles in this game and generally the solutions are evident after a few seconds. The greatest thing is the built-in replayability. Everywhere you go you see things that your characters can't reach or find doors you can't open. Free play mode allows you to take a group of switchable characters through the different levels to collect those items and open those doors. Given the issues with this game, the complete freedom to select levels to replay is especially welcome. Many of the early and middle levels are worth exploring again and again. But, as is true with all versions of the game, you need to find all canisters on all levels and get more than 10,000 LEGO studs on every level in both story mode and free play to unlock everything the game has to offer. My kids are already chipping away at that challenge on the early levels, but I know I won't ever hit 100% complete as I have on the PC version. The ease of the DS wireless connection makes sharing the game with friends extremely easy. We were able to play single-card ムBattle Arena' challenges effortlessly, but all of the other modes require one game card per DS. The one advantage to that solution is that many of the companion intelligence issues I encountered disappear with good cooperative multiplayer teamwork. Unfortunately I cannot recommend buying a single copy of this game, let alone one per DS! This review edited by Dave Long Comments? Chat about it in our forums!
