The ESRB says...
Cartoon Violence: The girls clobber all manner of cartoony lawn gnomes and alley cats with their guitars. Hi Hi Puffy AmiYumi is a popular Japanese female rock duo. They are so popular that they have their own cartoon show on Cartoon Network. Now you can join in their cartoon adventures on the Nintendo DS. In The Genie and the Amp, it's the recording session of their next big album, and Ami and Yumi get some help from a musical genie and travel back into different time periods to find their musical inspiration. Play as Ami or Yumi as they tromp through 3D side-scrolling locales, clobbering all manner of crazy foes like alley cats, toon frogs, and evil garden gnomes. Collect sushi ingredients to upgrade the rockers' skills. Dish out attacks by hitting the four strings of their guitars on the bottom touch screen, although it's easier just to use the A, B, X, and Y buttons. Either way, play control is slow and clunky. If you have two DS systems and two copies of the game, you can play two player simultaneous with the DS wireless functions. The headache-inducing graphics are so bright and loud that it's like looking into a radioactive bowl of Fruity Pebbles cereal. Your eyes will hurt after a few minutes of play, but at least the game looks like the cartoon show. Music features songs from the band and cartoon show, but only the most die-hard Puffy fans will be able to sit through this DS concert. ![]()
While Ami and Yumi do nothing but clobber bad guys, it's all cartoon violence as they only trounce silly enemies with their guitars. Reading skill is required as everything is text based with no voices. While based on a kids' cartoon, the DS game is actually rather hard, with tough enemies and controls, even on the easiest difficulty. Devoted kid fans of the Hi Hi Puffy AmiYumi cartoon may like their new 3D escapades on the DS, but nobody else will. At least the game is priced low.
