The ESRB says...
Fantasy Violence: While the kids are exploring a spooky haunted house, they only destroy living furniture by spraying water from a water gun at them. If one of the kids loses all their energy, the house just spits them back out and they start again from the last save point. Based on the summer kids' computer animated movie, Monster House is about a haunted house that eats anything and anyone who comes near it. When three kidsラDJ, Chowder, and Jennyラdecide to solve the mystery of the house, they get swallowed, too! Now they must figure a way out of the house while fending off living furniture and the house itself. Monster House on GBA is played from an overhead view. Explore the house's many rooms while solving puzzles and collecting vital items along the way. Gameplay is very similar to exploring a dungeon in a Zelda game. Fend off attacking chairs and other furniture with the gang's water guns. Each character has their own special water gun shots and other skills, and you can switch between them at any time. Graphics are decent and the music is appropriately eerie and spooky. Play control is alright but Monster House is surprisingly difficult for a game based on a kids' movie. If you want a portable game to play during the spooky Halloween season, then open the doors to Monster House. ![]()
Even though the movie and game is about a scary house, the limited graphics of the GBA platform keep the visuals from being very gruesome. Reading skill is required because everything unfolds in text. While it has a spooky vibe to it, there's nothing in the game that refers to the occult or other religious symbolism. It's a rather difficult game, especially for a kids' title. Enemies are usually faster and stronger than you, puzzles aren't always intuitive, and save points are few and far between. For this reason, Monster House is best suited for older kid gamers.
