Blood: your character shows all of the punishment he's been taking in a fight, and there is blood all around.
Sexual Themes: the ladies love a big strong fightin' man ...
Strong Language: you name the word, it is in here.
Violence: the game is a brutal one-on-one fighter at its core.

The console game Def Jam Fight for NY has been refreshed and ported to the PSP, and given the new name of Def Jam Fight for NY: The Takeover . There is a ton to do here ヨ there is a large story mode where you battle your way up the ranks, gaining prestige and respect along with money and skill points all the while. There is also a battle mode that gets you right into the action and allows you to go up against your friends in a bone-crunching battle. There is loads of stuff to unlock throughout the game, from the usual array of gear and bling to songs by some of the artists featured in the game. But the core of the game is the fighting ヨ and that is where the game excels. The mechanics and controls work very well ヨ the tutorial takes you step-by-step through each of the offensive and defensive moves, and you can return to practice more later on. There is some depth to the system ヨ your skill points make you more effective and allow you to add new fighting styles to gain more power. It is a brutal fighter in which every move looks and sounds painful ヨ the biggest criticism is that it doesn't reach the heights of Tekken: Dark Resurrection, but for fans of the genre having two solid games available should be nothing but good.

Where do I even start ... perhaps at the opening vignette where the crooked cop is leaning on your crooked friend and you intervene to stop the oppression of ムthe man', which leads right into a scene with the crooked cops looking to get even, barely being tempered by the commander. It shouldn't be surprising that a game based on the tough New York streets and a hip-hop lifestyle is very rough, full of shady characters and unsavory situations, and generally just inappropriate for kids. The language is very strong and reminiscent of many rap songs ヨ self-centered, full of obscenities and poor grammar, and generally degrading to women. From start to finish the game plays with the feel of a strongly R-rated movie.

My first ムfighter' game was Karateka on the Apple ][+ about 25 years or so ago, and that clean style of fighting remains a mainstay of many games in the genre to this day. Def Jam Fight for NY: The Takeover is having none of that ヨ even without a rumble feature you can ムfeel' it when your character lands a kick to his opponents' jaw, or flips hip backwards, or lands a pile-driver. The moves look and sound painful ヨ and the characters lay on the taunts and insults before, during and after the fight. The audience will grab you so your opponent can get in some cheap shots, and you can use the environment to inflict some extra pain. It is a very well done fighter ヨ but it is completely brutal.
