Comic Mischief: GamerDad found lots of random silliness typical of the cartoon series.
Mild Cartoon Violence: GamerDad used the characters to blast strange looking cartoon monsters!

Nicktoons was originally a generic name for any of the cartoons featured on the Nickelodeon Network, but as the popularity of many of the series has grown, so has the marketability of combining them in break-out shows and games. The latest of these ヨ Nicktoons: Battle for Volcano Island ヨ shows that attaching popular characters to a fairly average game and infusing it with the personalities of the characters can make for a fun experience!

The game has a simple premise ヨ SpongeBob SquarePants, Danny Phantom and Timmy Turner have been brought to an island in an alternate dimension by a strange hermit crab, labeled as ムthe chosen ones' and tasked with saving the island and all of its inhabitants. Doing this consists of simple but fun platform-action using standard controls to jump from area to area, battle enemies, and find hidden items to unlock doors so you can move on to the next section. The game consists of five areas with a mini-game in between each area. That mini-game is also featured in the download play, which makes this a fun travel game to share between kids.

There are better licensed games and better platform games ヨ but the majority are much worse. Nicktoons: Battle for Volcano Island transcends ordinary licensed games and generic platform games by doing an excellent job of bringing the cartoons to life on the DS and imbuing the action with the personality and humor of the characters.

The core themes in Nicktoons: Battle for Volcano Island are teamwork, sticking with a project, maintaining a positive attitude, and confronting your fears ヨ all with a sense of humor. The pacing of the action is slower, which allows the game to force you to think more about what character is needed to get past a particular hurdle. The humor is all the sort of silliness that runs rampant on the cartoon shows, and the violence is the tame elimination of walking tree monsters and other strange non-human and non-scary creatures.

Which version to buy?
DS: Reviewed above ヨ the best version.
GBA: by simplifying, some of the platform action is lost ヨ as is some of the fun.
PS2 & GameCube: better graphics and loads of characters, but not nearly as much fun ヨ definitely the worst version.
