The ESRB says:
Cartoon Violence: GamerDad attacked cartoon characters with punches, kicks, tornadoes, ice cubes, etc. Crude Humor: GamerDad heard the dragon announcer crack nose-picking jokes and whatnot. Xiaolin Showdown is a Saturday morning cartoon about four crazy martial arts-in-training kids who protect powerful artifacts from an evil boy genius. Now you can have all the fun of the cartoon on the PSP. Select from one of the four kids, and even a couple of the bad guys, too. Then fight each other in crazy arena style brawls similar to games like Super Smash Bros. and Power Stone. Unleash punches and kicks and other powerful yet silly attacks to turn opponents into ice cubes or spin them around in tornadoes. Pick up vases to toss at each other or power ups to give you energy and special moves. Compete in different fighting modes like Tag or King of the Hill. Graphics and sound are basic yet colorful, just like the TV show. Players can compete against each other wirelessly if each person has a copy of the game and their own PSP. Play control is a bit sluggish and floaty and only fans of the cartoon will really dig Xiaolin Showdown. ![]()
Even though the game is about fighting, it's only cartoony with mostly silly attacks like tornadoes and ice cubes. If your kids are OK with the cartoon, they'll be OK with the game, too. Reading skill is helpful but not required as the funny dragon announcer does a pretty good job of explaining things most of the time. The story has demons and spirits in it that strict religious families may not be comfortable with. Multiplayer mode on the PSP can be tough since everyone needs a PSP and a game. It might be better to get one of the home console versions so multiple players can share the TV and controllers on the game system. But only kids who really dig the cartoon will get into the Xiaolin Showdown game.
Which Version to Buy? PSP: The version reviewed here. PS2: Looks like the PSP version. Probably easier to have multiplayer matches since nobody has to have their own PSP. Xbox: Ditto on this version. DS: While the other versions look like competitive beat-em-ups, the DS version appears to have a more adventure side to it. And the 2-D sprite graphics look much better. Might be fun. Comments?
