Mild Lyrics: Rock and rap dominate the soundtrack.
Mild Violence: Crashes are hard and look like they hurt. Story-mode contributes some mild moments as well.

The developer of the original ATV Offroad Fury for Sony is long gone. PC gamers know that original team (Rainbow Studios) from the awesome Motocross Madness games. Developer Climax Studios took over with the third game in the series and now they've taken the game beyond the title in ATV Offroad Fury 4 by tossing trucks, buggies and motorcycles into the mix.

The motorcycles are the best new addition to the game. They handle like bikes should, and really put some exhilarating moments in a series that's a little stale. The trucks and buggies don't seem to fit quite as well with the physics model underlying the driving, but provide a nice diversion. The reason the developer is notable is because Climax created Acclaim's knock-off of this series, ATV Quad Power Racing. That series just never quite seemed right on the dirt and definitely fell short of the efforts of Rainbow Studios with Fury. It's still a problem, because as good as this game plays, it's not quite on the same level as the first two in the series.

There are some cool tracks and plenty of content on this disc to keep you occupied as well as a track editor to create your own layouts, but if you've played the earlier games in this series, you probably don't need to get this one.

Click to learn more about GamerDad's Kid Factor review section. There's a story mode in this game that probably helps contribute to the "Mild Violence" label from the ESRB. It's just as dumb as you'd expect a story mode to be in an offroad racing game, so you can easily steer your kids away from it. The soundtrack is typically rock and rap oriented so families that avoid that kind of thing should beware. On the other hand, it turned me onto a great band that I otherwise never would've known about. I guess those soundtrack placements really do turn into CD sales sometimes?

Other than the story, dudes are flying off of their bikes and landing hard with regularity and it looks like it hurts. Young boys will laugh like hyenas at the mayhem, but parents might not be quite as enamored of the carnage. Still, it's all very tame and definitely E-rated fare, so only reactionary videogame violence crusaders should get upset.
