Blood and Gore: GamerDad found blood and guts everywhere. The screen will glow bright red when your character experiences pain. Intense Violence: GamerDad found not only gunshot wounds but the ability to cut someone in half with a chainsaw or blow bodies up from the inside out. Strong Language: GamerDad certainly heard it all in this game ヨ the main characters are hard-nosed soldiers who let fly in normal conversation. ![]() Wow - just... wow. That's the first thing you'll say when you get your hands on Gears of War. And if it wasn't for a slew of simply brilliant games that have seen almost simultaneous release for the Xbox 360, your jaw might stay dropped for the next three months. This game is simply fantastic. My favourite first person shooter titles have all been based on the Unreal graphics engines and Gears of War is no exception. It's the first (although not only ヨ Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Vegas was hot on its heels) game that harnesses the power of the new Unreal Engine 3 with a glut of special effects that fully immerse you in a world that has gone insane. The game should be considered "duck and shoot" style as you hide behind cover, pop up to take a shot or run to the next bit of cover and then repeat until you can overrun enemy positions, but that would simplify the sheer cool factor that can be found in the various ways of doing all of these actions. There are multiple ways of taking cover, and breaking from it, and combat spans from standard rifle fire to grenades to an awesomely visceral chainsaw attachment to your gun that can cut enemies in half. Even this doesn't explain the gameplay well enough - as you can mix it up in all sorts of ways - try implanting a grenade INSIDE a bad guy and wait for the results. Awesomely awful. ![]() Graphically, Gears of War shows the true capability of both the Xbox 360 and the Unreal Engine 3, complete with proper lip synchronisation when characters talk to you to gorgeous explosions and environments that are so beautiful to look at that you can sometimes end up in all sorts of trouble with the enemy because you were taking a close look at the detail on something as inane as the brickwork. The single player story is only about 6 to 8 hours but this game is made for multiplayer and completely and utterly rocks at the task. If you're looking for a solid, no-holds-barred shooting game that you can play with a few mates, Gears of War is going to be the answer to your question. Gears of War is Microsoft's "Halo" for Xbox 360. It WILL sell consoles, and deservedly so. However, for a family-based gaming experience, it's definitely not appropriate. The game is based on a violent struggle between humankind and truly horrendous aliens and is full of swearing, blood and all out combat. There is an option to tone this down, but it's still an incredibly violent game that you should seriously consider before allowing even your teenage kids to come anywhere near it.
Gears of War is an incredibly violent game in terms of visuals, sound and storyline, featuring graphic depictions of fantastical modern warfare. Besides being a completely animalistic experience that lets you "de-stress" from a busy day at the office, there's nothing educational here ヨ just sheer violent awesomeness, completely inappropriate for younger eyes and ears.
