Long a favorite for casual PC gamers, this addictive puzzle game now lets you play on the go ... but should you?

Puzzle games are simple fun. Who knows how many hours of business time have been lost on games such as Tetris, Minesweeper or Bejeweled? LUXOR was released as a PC game a couple of years ago and has been very successful, and the basic game mechanic translates very well for portable gaming. The basic mechanism is this - there are multiple colored balls streaming along paths towards your base. You use your 'ball shooter' to launch colored balls at that chain of colored balls. Make a link of three or more balls and they explode and give you points. If the remaining balls joining together are the same color you could end up with a chain or combo, leading to more points and occasionally coins, treasure or Ankh symbols being released. You need to get a certain amount of points to clear the level, plus take care of any remaining balls. If this sounds like Zuma, it is because there are some considerable similarities. Think Zuma but with a shooter that slides along the bottom rather than rotating in the center.
LUXOR: The Wrath of Set brings the PC game nicely to the PSP, giving you basically the same experience - the looks and gameplay are solid, and the load times are fairly quick. In fact, if you only play the first stage you will likely be very impressed with the game. But by the second stage you will be utterly bored, and by the end of the third stage at the latest you will have realized that it will never get any better or more interesting. Not only that, but there is no multiplayer mode or any other way to gauge your play against others. All you have is story mode with twenty stages and endless mode. That isn't a problem - I can play Bejeweled 2 for hours and always come back to it for more. But after extended play and attempts at replaying, you will quickly realize that the game doesn't have that much to offer - there are better puzzle games on the PSP, and you should play them instead.

The action is fast and furious in LUXOR, possible a bit too frantic for younger kids. I considered age-rating the game for 6+ instead of all ages, but there is no reason for a 4 year old not to try their hand at this (if you let them play your PSP in the first place). It is purely a game about color matching and reflexes, and is a fun game to share with your family. I played it for a while with my family, and the stages are short enough that people don't get too fidgety in between turns. However, due to the boredom factor mentioned above I quickly found myself alone with the PSP once again ... so I switched to a more interesting game.
