The ESRB Says
Animated Blood: GamerDad saw some pixilated blood-like spatter as enemy monsters were destroyed, but nothing realistic. Mild Fantasy Violence: The game is full of simple combat against monsters and vampires. Mild Language: Expressions typical of the age rating are used, and only occasionally. (e.g. 'damn' and 'hell') Mild Suggestive Themes: there is flirting and other innocent innuendo. After two years, we're finally seeing some good role playing games for the Nintendo DS. The system had a real dearth of good games for the genre - and a primary offender of the early very bad games was Lunar Dragon Song. I admit that seeing the title of this release made me think of that game, which made me quite wary. I'm glad I pursued the game and found out that there was no relationship between the games - because this game is fast, furious, fun, and possibly the best handheld role-playing game yet for the Nintendo DS! You take on the roles of two character - Lucian and Adrian - who are both trying to destroy the vampire overlords who have occupied their planet and put a solar barrier in place to enforce an eternal night. They act for their own reasons, and we get a lengthy look at their individual motivations as the game unfolds. The way in which the story unfolds is surprising - this is a very action-oriented game, with loads of combat and space flight missions in between, and yet the game deftly keeps you in touch with the story and characters throughout. The use of the DS controls is also handled well - you need to use the touch-screen and microphone, but you are never shouting into the mic like in certain other games. The result is a game that is very exciting and fast paced, but at the same time has a solid and engaging story and interesting characters. This is a rare mix indeed, and one that will be enjoyable for gamers of all types and ages. ![]()
There is a certain level of content typical of anime inspired action games rated E-10 - you will battle plenty of monsters, there will be some expressions that your kid's teacher wouldn't appreciate, and there is light flirting between teenage boys and girls. Lunar Knights features all of these things, and not much more. These are enough to recommend the game for kids 10 and older, but with very few caveats. Indeed, slightly younger kids could likely handle it based on what is shown on most Cartoon Network shows - but as always, use your best judgment deciding if this is appropriate, because the action gets quite intense at times, and the themes of vampires and a captive world on the brink of destruction can be harrowing to smaller kids.
