The ESRB says:
Fantasy Violence: GamerDad made robots fire weapons and shoot bombs at each other. Build and battle your own customizable robot in Custom Robo Arena for Nintendo DS. In story mode, play as a high school student who wants to win the Custom Robo championship. Advance the story along by taking to everyone and participating in robot battles. This part of the game is viewed in a top-down fashion with simple 2-D graphics, similar to Pokemon. Once you meet someone who wants to battle robots with you, your miniature battle machines enter a 3-D arena. Jump, tackle, fire guns, and launch bombs in quick, action packed battles. The winner gets experience points, money, and sometimes new parts for your robot. If you lose, re-battle your opponent again without fear of losing money or items. Buy and earn parts to equip and exchange with your robo to give it different battle skills, bombs, shots, and maneuverability. The amount of customization you can do in this game is staggering. Equip leg, body, guns, bombs, and other parts to change your battle strategy out in the arena. While in the garage, which you can access at any time outside of battle, use the stylus pen and touch screen to polish your robot and view it in different poses. Graphics are simple yet colorful and easy on the eyes. Play control is easy to learn and the game walks you through the intricacies of battle and customization. Best of all, you can pit your Custom Robo against other players on the Internet with Nintendo's Wi-Fi capabilities. Or battle with nearby DS owners with one or multiple cartridges. While Custom Robo Arena can be a little gabby and repetitive at times, anyone who enjoys action based battles and tinkering around with toys will love Custom Robo Arena. ![]()
Kids who enjoy playing with LEGOs, Bionicle, or just like to take apart and put together their toys will love the customization features of Custom Robo Arena. Even though the robots shoot and throw bombs at each other, violence is still minimal because it's only toys fighting each other and nobody dies or gets hurt. Strong reading skill is a must because everything is explained with text. Lots of text. Even the instruction booklet is fifty pages long! Younger gamers may get bored with the complexity of it all, but if they like games like Pokemon, they'll feel right at home here. Big families will have a hard time sharing the game because there is only one save file per cartridge. Playing online is relatively safe, as you must get consent from other players with friend codes to battle each other, and the only objectionable things you might come across is if someone's character name is offensive. Overall, Custom Robo Arena is a fairly decent game for the whole family.
