The ESRB Says
Blood: GamerDad saw blood spattered over the cockpit when crew members were hit by fire from the ground. Mild Language: There is some chatter appropriate for the era and situation, but not at the level of even ムGood Morning Vietnam'. Violence: This game is all about clearing out the enemy using the weapons on your helicopter. You don't expect a deep game from a budget title but you almost get one with Whirlwind Over Vietnam. A respectable set of options can configure the game to your desires and with a joystick the flight model isn't completely toothless. If you're not much of a flier, take the place of a door gunner and let the computer do the piloting. The graphics do a decent job of depicting Vietnam's terrain of vegetation and hills, and the vehicle and human models are convincing. But a single campaign with a scant ten missions, no stand-alone missions, no multi-player support, and no tutorials or free flight modes leave this one feeling unfinished and beneath its potential. ![]()
It can be bloody if you get into a tight scrape, though you could play most of it without ever seeing a drop. And despite the game's thematic association with an unpopular war, Whirlwind keeps to its simulation roots by staying largely focused on the vehicle action and not any politics or the nastiness often associated with the infantry life in Vietnam. There is considerable gunplay and combat, however, which you'll find in all military simulations. Some of the radio chatter during the missions adds some historical context but can also feature some choice swearing. Upper class high school and college students that liked the movie We Were Soldiers might be interested to know the game's missions were based on real missions from action in the Ia Drang Valley.
Ultimately, if your children are fans of history or aviation and are aware of colorful language but mature enough to handle it, then there's not much in Whirlwind to surprise them compared to what they're witnessing in action movies, on television, or at school.
