The ESRB says:
Mild Language GamerDad read lots of text in the game, but didn't see any foul language. It must be used sparingly in the game. Mild Violence Characters must fight off wild animals, and are always in danger of dying on the island, but there is no blood or grisly death scenes. After a cruse ship accident, two teens Jack and Amy are stranded on an uninhabited tropical desert island and it's up to you to help them survive in Lost in Blue 2 for the Nintendo DS. Choose to play as one of the teens and the other will be your partner, controlled by the CPU. Your partner, by the way, it totally useless and you literally have to guide him or her by the hand if you want them to go with you around the island. As soon as you find shelter, it'll be all you can do to keep these two barely alive. Venture from the cave to find tools to make a fire, fresh water, and any edibles you can scavenge while monitoring scads of statistics on the teens' hunger, thirst, and stamina levels. If you can get the hang of basic survival, later on you can explore more parts of the island, find better means of living, and maybe even find a way off the island. ![]() Collect items and combine them to build vital survival tools. For instance, after gathering a few twigs and pieces of wood, you can combine them to make a crude fire starter. Back at the cave, play a touch screen themed mini-game challenge to start a fire. Tap the screen alternating between left and right to simulate rubbing the sticks, and then blow into the microphone to set the smolder ablaze. You can even challenge a friend wirelessly in some of the mini-games. Finding food to cook is a similar process. Scavenge up a few items on the beach and combine them back at the cave and you can have a tasty dinner of clams, seaweed, and baked coconuts. The game makers got the authenticity of feeding two teens on the mark in Lost in Blue 2, as no matter how much you feed these kids, they NEVER get full! Later on in the game you'll have to deal with even bigger challenges, like fending off wild animals. The 3-D graphics are pretty good and the audio effectively conveys the feeling of being lost in the wilderness. Unfortunately, many of the things you must do are not as intuitive at first, and with a high learning curve, there's no room for mistakes at the start. You may find yourself starting the game over again a few times (like I did) because you got to a point where it was too hard or too late to keep your teens alive. Lost in Blue 2 is one of those games where you're either going to really love it or really hate it, so if you like solving unintuitive puzzles and challenges, you'll enjoy getting lost in this game. ![]()
Lost in Blue 2 is best for older kid gamers. Lots of reading is required as everything in all in text. Violence is pretty mild, but you do have to fend off wild animals and it can be disheartening when your characters die after all the hard work it takes to keep them alive. Plus the difficulty and unintuitive nature of the gameplay will turn off kids, too. But if they like to watch TV shows like Survivor and Discovery Channel's Survivor Man, they may be interested in Lost in Blue 2 anyway.
