Popcap Games makes simple little games that somehow pack more gameplay and value into a tiny download than most larger game developers can fit onto a DVD-ROM. And now, just after fans finally shake their addiction to classics like "Zuma," "Bejeweled," and the excellent "Bookworm Adventures". Popcap releases "Peggle," probably their most trance inducing video game past time yet!
"Peggle" is childlike in terms of its artwork οΎ– which might put off some adults - and extremely simple in its design, but don't let that fool you. This is an extremely well crafted game. At the top of each board is a cute critter with a ball-launcher. The board is composed of blue pegs in a pattern with a drain at the bottom that moves back and forth. You launch your ball from almost any angle, trying to hit as many pegs in the process. The pegs turn red and disappear; once the board is cleared, it's on to the next level. The cute furry animals add special powers like multiple balls, explosions, and more and after you've completed the game its fun to retry levels using different powers. The levels progress from flower patterns and basic shapes into fiendishly complicated designs with moving and magical obstacles littering each board. Trying out different angles, and trying to do better each time, is surprisingly fun and rewarding and the way the ball slows down as it approaches the last peg and strikes it and you're rewarded with fire-works and Beethoven's "Ode to Joy." Joyful we adore thee, indeed! Despite the cuteness, "Peggle" packs a lot of game into a small package. I'm told "Peggle" plays like Pachinko but I've never played Pachinko, all I know is that that this is one seriously compulsive game experience. The first time I tried it, 3 hours magically disappeared. ![]()
There's nothing offensive or controversial in "Peggle." But the game does encourage obsessive play ("Maybe if I try shooting this way I can win!") and parents might want to limit or keep track of how much their kids are playing. "Peggle" is a $19.99 download and available at Popcap.com.
