It's starting to get too hot to golf, so why not play in your own air-conditioned living room instead? "Tiger Woods PGA Tour οΎ‘07" lets you do that, and is a perennial classic. It's a terrific golf simulation available on every platform in existence... except one. That's been rectified and for the remainder of this review we'll be talking mainly about "Tiger Woods PGA Tour '07" for the Nintendo Wii.
"Wii Sports" offered a taste of what golf could be like with Nintendo's magic controller but it's was only a taste. We've been waiting for a full game, because we want to swing our controller like a golf club instead of pushing a stick on a gamepad (or using a mouse). If you're a real world golfer and have played a golf video game using a 3-click or even a mouse or joystick swing method you know that this, actually using your own swing, is the Holy Grail of video game golf. The good news is that the Wii controls for "Tiger Woods '07" are far better than "Wii Sports Golf", the bad news is that the control scheme takes a lot of practice, is unforgiving, and isn't as perfect as we'd hoped. For the most part it works. Simply swing the remote as if it's a golf club. Well, not exactly like a golf club, you really only have to swing it while making sure you hit the ball squarely (or you'll realistically hook or slice the ball into the rough). So you can actually play one handed if you like. But you have to watch the screen to know when to swing stop your backswing and start swinging forward (looking at anything but the ball as you swing is the wrong way to play golf), and sometimes, just sometimes, you'll whiff or watch as your full 200 yard swing is mistranslated by the motion sensors as a 25 yard grounder. This happens in real life too of course, nobody is perfect (except Tiger), but at least in real golf you know you've hit poorly before your swing is done. Here you can swing perfectly, or at least the same way you did last time, and for unknown reasons, hit the ball badly. That's frustrating, and while a remote thrown into a wall isn't as expensive as golf clubs thrown lost forever in a water hazard . . . it's still a bad idea. But when it works, it works, and it feels incredibly realistic to play the course against your own limitations than it is using any other control system. If you have a Wii, and like golf, this is worth purchasing, or at least a rental, but I bet we'll find Tiger Woods '08 for the Wii a much more impressive beast. ![]()
While the game won't teach kids or spouses how to play golf (it could develop some pretty bad habits actually) it's a great way to share your hobby or passion with youngsters or family and friends not interested in the real thing. The courses are gorgeous, the competition is fierce, and you can play with four friends and family, using a single Wii remote. Go ahead, hit the links, visit Pebble Beach, all from the safety of your own living room.
